"What most prescribers and patients don't understand is that 'you can have symptoms that persist for long periods after you stop them,' said British psychiatrist Mark Horowitz, who specializes in antidepressant withdrawal. According to one analysis of patient narratives, people who experienced long-term withdrawal suffered for an average of eight years."

"27% of Pilots have misrepresented their medical history to the FAA. 46% admitted to seeking “informal” medical care, and 56% reported healthcare avoidance."

This includes airline pilots that are responsible for the safety of their many passengers.

"Court rules FAA antidepressant denial 'arbitrary' "

aopa.org/news-and-media/all-ne

"In a case that could open the door to medical certification incrementally wider for pilots who seek treatment for mental health conditions, a federal appeals court ordered the FAA to reconsider or further explain its reason for denying the application of an airline pilot who took an unapproved medication with characteristic side effects that are similar to another on the agency's approved list."

This also impacts hobbyist flyers, such as Xyla Foxlin:

www.aopa.orgCourt rules FAA antidepressant denial 'arbitrary'A federal appeals court took the FAA to task for failing to provide a rationale for disallowing a medication that is similar to approved prescriptions, a decision that could have implications for pilots being treated for various mental health conditions.

The claim is circulating that antidepressants can cause overheating and dehydration. This is a genuine public health message, but it's not so simple: diuretics, beta blockers, ACE inhibitors, antipsychotics, and some antihistamines may also interact badly with hot weather.
nytimes.com/2024/06/15/well/li (excerpt in a reply)

There's even doubt about antidepressants having this effect. A recent paper in eClinicalMedicine looked at all the studies they could find and concluded that there wasn't evidence of antidepressants causing overheating in hot weather - though some other medicines do.

"Current evidence supports strong anticholinergics, non-selective beta-blockers, adrenaline, and anti-Parkinson’s agents impairing thermoregulation during heat stress ... physicians should interpret with caution conventional public health messaging related to the thermoregulatory effects of some drugs (e.g., antidepressants) during hot weather."

The New York Times · These Common Medications Can Make Heat Waves More DangerousPar Katie Mogg

Yeah maybe society shouldn’t push psych meds on people who are having trouble existing in this capitalist health scape because of systematic problems.

Why should people be forced to take psychiatric medication just so they can more calmly except the systematic problems? Especially if they’re going to get #ALS from them? (And listen I am pro medication, Adderall changed my life. But I remember being prescribed SSRI’s in the early 2000s because I was having trouble affording life after the price gouging that never went down after 9/11. Prozac wouldn’t make my previously $400 now $700 rent more affordable.)

“Question  Is there an association between prescribed use of common psychiatric medications and the risk and progression of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)?
Findings  In this case-control study including nearly 9000 individuals, prescribed use of #anxiolytics, #hypnotics and #sedatives, or #antidepressants was associated with a 34%, 21%, and 26% higher future risk of ALS. Prediagnostic use of such medications was also associated with poor prognosis after ALS diagnosis.
Meaning  These findings suggest a potential link between psychiatric medications, or their indications (ie, psychiatric disorders), and the risk and progression of ALS.”

The order said the commission should prepare a “Make Our Children Healthy Again” assessment within 100 days that examines “the prevalence of & threat posed by the prescription of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, stimulants, & weight-loss drugs.” The directive comes as children & teens endure a #MentalHealth crisis exacerbated by the covid pandemic.

#Trump has instructed his admin to scrutinize the “threat” to children posed by #antidepressants, stimulants & other common #psychiatric drugs, targeting medication taken by millions in his latest challenge to long-standing #medical practices.

The directive came in an #ExecutiveOrder that established a “Make America Healthy Again” commission led by Secy of #HHS #RFKJr. Kennedy has criticized the use of those drugs & issued false claims about them.

#RFKJr cited drugs’ “black box” warning, which states that some #antidepressants may be linked to suicidal ideation & behaviors in adolescents & young adults. The #FDA based its decision on an analysis of drug trials in which there was a risk of suicidal thoughts but no suicides. Other studies found SSRIs were associated w/lower suicide rates & a lower risk of suicidal behavior, causing some experts to call for a reevaluation of the warning.

None of which has anything to do w/ #SchoolShootings.

I hadn’t heard this despicable statement by #RFKJr before today:

Sen #TinaSmith, D-MN, spoke about her own battle with illness in questioning Kennedy on his views about #antidepressants. She pointed to misinformation he has spread & said his statements added to the #stigma around #MentalIllness. Kennedy said in the past, without evidence, that the majority of school shooters take antidepressants, suggesting that the medications are a cause of #SchoolShootings.

#Antidepressants "change your perception of the world, the kinetics of your movements or your emotional reactivity.
"Several studies have shown that very early changes (before any effect on mood) affect the recognition of facial emotions, the learning of new information or the updating of your beliefs."

"When you take an antidepressant, it is easier for you to recognize the smiles, the positive feelings on the faces of the people you're meeting on the street. It also is harder for you to recognize the negative feelings, the feelings of anger, the feelings of fear. And you have an easier recall of your positive, pleasant memories of the past.

In pharmacology, an #antidepressant refers to a fairly diverse set of molecules that do not have the same modes of action, the same therapeutic effects or the same undesirable effects.

A common goal: to target monoamines, neuromodulators

Generally speaking, these are molecules that target what are called #neurotransmitters, including serotonin, noradrenaline or dopamine. When a neurotransmitter attaches to receptors in one neuron, it transmits an electrical message that can be transmitted to another neuron. It's kind of like a relay race. There are over 20 different types of synapses, each of which conveys specific messages and are involved in this brain activity differently."

Ethical alarms should be ringing over jabs for the jobless

#SameOldGovt

Would taking a drug be voluntary or would it be mandatory for entitlement to #benefits? Recalling Labour’s previous support for conditionality & sanctions, one can see which way it would go

Would giving #drugs for obesity be precedent for other medical conditions?

Many #unemployed become #depressed. Will #DWP mandate #antidepressants, or lose benefits?
