The #Waimakariri River rose rapidly on Wednesday under the influence of the nor’-wester, and marooned three men, who were employed by the Waimakariri River Trust, on a small island above White’s Bridge. With the water still rising about the island, the men’s position became very precarious. At about 2 p.m. Constable Holmes, of Kaiapoi, received a telephone message that the men were in difficulties, and, procuring ropes, he and Constable Warren set off to rescue them. In the meantime, however, Messrs. Cusack and Gough had obtained a punt, and, at considerable risk, had launched it in the swirling river, a considerable distance up the stream from the island. They managed to guide the boat to the island as it was carried downstream, and the five men embarked in it again. They had a most adventurous passage, but they all landed safely on the bank. Three draught #horses, the property of Mr. C. Bell, were being worked on the island to clear away willows, and these were liberated before the men left the island. When the flood rose over the island, the horses were washed off and swept ashore about a mile further downstream, near the railway bridge.

The smaller wooden door to the right is opened at 4:00pm every weekend to allow dog owners to 'chase the bishop'. A tradition beginning in the 16th century in which locals with hounds would pursue members of the clergy round and round the gate entrance.

#JustinWelby, the Archbishop of #Canterbury who endorsed the Chief Rabbi's smearing of Jeremy Corbyn, and snubbed Palestinian Pastor Munther Isaac because Corbyn had stood with him, turned a blind eye to a report on a sadistic child abuser of his long acquaintance.

Welby's also the guy who said Prince Andrew should be welcomed back into public life as he'd suffered enough. Starting to see a pattern here.

Anyway, glad he's gone, though I'm sure he'll be replaced by someone equally compromised.

Welby had come across Smyth when he volunteered at the Iwerne Trust holiday camps in Dorset. He said in 2017: “As I recall him, he was a charming, delightful, very clever, brilliant speaker. I wasn’t a close friend of his, I wasn’t in his inner circle or in the inner circle of the leadership of the camp, far from it.” He has said he had no inkling of the abuse or of concerns about Smyth at the time. Last week’s report said this was “unlikely”. Welby “may not have known of the extreme seriousness of the abuse, but it is most probable that he would have had at least a level of knowledge that John Smyth was of some concern”. In 2013, a few months after Welby took up his role as archbishop, he and other senior figures were notified of the allegations. Last week, he acknowledged that he did not “ensure that this was pursued as energetically, as remorselessly as it should have been”. It was, he said, a “really shaming failure”. By 2013, there was no excuse for not acting. Thirty years earlier, when initial evidence about Smyth’s abuse was uncovered, it could be argued there was a culture that failed to recognise the damage caused by abuse and that allowed institutions to prioritise reputation over justice.
