Some very good news is I have finally managed to find some horse manure from organic paddocks that are not treated with herbicides.
I will use some of it to make some hot compost.
Winning. #Gardening #Compost

Since the ground is still too wet for any further planting out, today became "move all the compost mulch" day. We had enough of our own compost to manage doing about ¾ of the tomato plants. The rest will have to make do with grass clippings and shredded leaf mold as they become available. Weather continues to be cool and wet. At least the cabbage and lettuce likes it.

So, tbh, 80 gallons of food waste, plant matter, old soil, etc., yields about 30-40 gallons of compost. It takes a lot to make good soil!

Beware of "compostable" products that aren't actually compostable at home. In digging through my compost pile this week I unearthed 3 forks (from takeout food I purchased several years ago) that I think were made by the California-based company, Karat Earth (aka Lollicup). On Amazon and elsewhere the sentence the company uses in marketing is "simply toss the fork into a compost bin when finished." And the forks themselves have the text, "compostable" embossed on them. On company's own website, however, is a logo from the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) indicating, in a small font, that forks are "commercially compostable only," which means they only begin to break down at ~190 °F (88 °C). Somebody needs to file a class-action lawsuit to force greater transparency on marketing materials. #compost #composting #fork #takeout #food #psa #plastic #restaurants #greenwashing #polymer #corn #bioplastic
@Badgardener Nice.
I have a compost trommel which is also really effective at quickly sieving compost. #Compost
This weekend the #FediverseChicks have been "helping" me shuffle my compost heaps around (the middle one full of ready-to use compost went to the right, and the left one full of fresh compost then went to the middle)
The chicks loved every minute of it...
This week's contraption.
I do a LOT of soil sieving - in my work, large garden projects have soil removed/added by the lorry load, but with smaller ones, I'll bag it up and bring it home to be sieved, mixed with organic matter and then re-used elsewhere.
I'm also opening up the large 'compost' bins, which in reality are just aged cold piles of sticks, grass cuttings and chicken poo.
So it was a long overdue project to make a wheelbarrow frame for (much) quicker processing: the frame itself has a fixed one-inch mesh for initial sorting, and there's a removable half-inch mesh for finer grading afterwards.
Put about half a dumpy bag of waste soil through it yesterday, and will do about a cubic metre of compost today, mainly for throwing into the beds.
Should have done this AGES ago.
A record-breaking 3.8 million pounds of compost was collected in the second week of a new recycling mandate in New York City — a number so overwhelming that the city is opening a new site dedicated to the “black gold.” #nyc #compost #Recycling #environment #climate #ClimateChange #earth #food #waste #renewables #foodwaste

I've just mixed up the #compost heap a bit as there were some dry bits which didn't seem to be rotting down. Sorry, Worms! I didn't mean to disturb you. I'll let you get on with your magic now.

En los apacibles bosques del distrito de Nawalpur, en Nepal, se está produciendo una revolución que utiliza las herramientas más inverosímiles: trituradoras de ramas y pilas de compost. I don't know what bothers me more:
my burning curiosity to know who receives the valuable #compost generated by my city's organic waste pickup program, or the awareness that "who's stealing my garbage??" was also the obsession of Tom Arnold's nitwit protagonist in the 1996 masterpiece "The Stupids".
Today, I saw something I'd never seen before.
Art made of compost.
It’s hard to explain... But it deeply inspired me. So much so, I had to write a blog post about it:
