Excuse the reflected fingerprints - that's glass tables for you - but we've taken advantage of the brighter days now to finally make a start on the Norwegian fjords jigsaw puzzle we picked up earlier this year on our travels.

We're at a low angle looking diagonally along a glass dining table on which the edge pieces of a jigsaw have been put together at the far end while the end near us has all the remaining puzzle pieces face up and laid out randomly ready for fitting. The dominant colours of the jigsaw are blues, teals, and greens. The glass table reflects light from a window in the wall behind and high up and it shows that there are lots of fingerprints on the glass surface at the end. The window has long, dark brown curtains hanging down, and the wall is painted a deep raspberry. A few abstract, vibrant, cartoon or street art-style pieces of artwork are mounted on the wall and an elephant figure is easy to make out. These pieces are also reflected in the glass at the end of the table. A metal-framed chair is at the far end and the jigsaw box is hanging from the backrest, facing us. It shows the puzzle is that of a cruise ship in Norwegian fjords in a style that would not be too out of place in 1930s art deco travel posters.

The final excursion on our 2017 Baltic cruise had us taking a guided tour of Gdańsk, visiting St Mary’s Church - one of the largest brick churches in the world - and seeing some of the historical highlights of this city massively restored after World War II following the huge amount of destruction it faced. Pictured here is the 17th century Neptune's Fountain and behind that is Artus Court (named for King Arthur), a gothic meeting hall for merchants in the past.

We're in a wide and busy pedestrianised area of a city with houses and other buildings along that look to be centuries old. Buildings in various colours with four floors and stepped and sometimes curved gables are either side of a wider, more impressive building in pale blue, large, stone bricks, with three enormous arched window fronts rising up three floors and an ornate doorway in the centre. In the pedestrian area there is a fountain with a figure with trident atop it and many people are walking past or admiring the sights.

It's #MeerMittwoch and we get to see a lot of the sea when we cruise. We never tire of it. One enjoyable event we often get to witness is the loading and unloading of pilots to and from their fast boats. It's impressive to see them leap from their boats to the cruise ship and vice versa out at sea. The pilots use local knowledge to guide the ships in and out of ports, but you probably knew that already.

We're at an elevated position - a balcony on a cruise ship - looking slightly down to the water which fills the view. The water is deeply blue with a hint of green to it. From this height it looks fairly calm with a few rises and falls of water casting highlights and shadows on the surface but there's a boat we're focussed on that's cutting through the water and throwing out a large foaming crash of sea ahead of it and a frothing wake behind. The boat is a pilot vessel, fairly small with just a few crew, designed for speed and manoeuvrability. It has a long hull in black and a small white bridge raised towards the rear with an orange roof.

The next stop on our 2017 cruise was Finland, docking at the port of Helsinki, and another tour awaited us for the early part of our visit. And also rain. Lots and lots of rain. We started with a trip to the Sibelius Monument. This was the winning design for a sculpture announced after the Finnish composer's death.

We're in a public park with red gravel underfoot and leafy trees all around. It's a completely overcast day and the rain is coming down soaking into the ground and giving the leaves on the trees a dark green sheen against the gloomy sky. Raincoats-wearing tourists are gathered in front of us, most with their backs to our view as they're looking at the sculpture we've all come to see. It resembles an immense set of pan pipes but offset from one another, almost forming a large wave-like form. Each of the hundred or more steel pipes is a different length and a different height above ground with radii from a child's hand across to an adult's with fingers splayed. The exterior surfaces of the pipes are covered with intricate detail that catch the light and the rain and give it all a rough texture from this distance.

After our day's exploration and visit to the Hermitage we'd then headed off to the ballet in the evening - an incredible experience but not one you're allowed to take photos in, sadly - and the next day saw us return to Saint Petersburg for a boat ride along the canals and rivers that snake through the city. We had a lovely time cruising along the Moyka, Fontanka, and Neva rivers with commentary on sights and a glass of champagne too. One fun element was a young boy who ran ahead of us to all the bridges we'd pass under just to wave down or to do handstands, cartwheels, etc. A way for the kids to earn some cash and he was tipped by many of the tourists on the boat at the end.

We're on a canal in the middle of a city on a bright day. We can see two other tourist boats here on the wide bit of choppy, dark blue water, both flat-bottomed and wide enough for half a dozen or more people sitting side-by-side. One boat is on the water ahead of us while another is moored by the canal wall and near a bridge over the water and pontoon alongside. The canal walls are large stone bricks, about two metres above the water level then topped with railings. There are buildings on the street, all large, mostly flat-fronted, and impressively decorated on their façades with columns and elements of regency and neoclassical designs. The bridge over the canal ahead of us is green metal and only lightly curved to increase some height over the water in the centre for the tourist boats to pass under. The bridge is busy with people walking across.

After lunch on our first day in Saint Petersburg that saw us trying caviar (nice) and vodka (or nail varnish remover; difficult to be sure), we headed to the main point of interest for us for the day, the State Hermitage museum. It was huge, and our guide, doing his best, still only took us through a small portion of the rooms to point out important works of art over the course of the afternoon. We were definitely getting art fatigue by the time our time there came to an end but there was still so much more to see.

We're in a large space that could be a ballroom in a stately home. The floor is light-coloured wooden parquet tiles arranged diagonally. From the high ceiling there are six huge chandeliers hanging, each with two tiers of electric candles set, arranged in circles. The fittings are gold, as is most of the decor in this large spacious room, with fluted columns topped by Corinthian order capitals completely covered in gold and supporting a balcony that runs along the lengths and widths of room, including over the arched doorway at the far end from us. Between the columns on the right side of the room there are tall windows set with arches above too, letting in plenty of natural daylight. The room is fairly busy with groups of tourists either walking through or standing around to take photos.

The interior of Saint Isaac's Cathedral in Saint Petersburg. It was impressively over-the-top in terms of decoration here. The cathedral was turned into a museum in 1931 although there were attempts to transfer it back to the church in more recent years - weak governments do like the crutch of religion to add to their control, after all - but these have been opposed by local people so far.

We're looking up at the ceiling of a church, at an angle so that the arched support of one side of an area supporting a cupola above curves from the bottom left to two thirds of the way across the top of the view. The cupola is to the upper left and there is a small row of windows around its base letting light in. Every bit of the surface of the ceiling, supporting columns, arches, and cupola dome's interior is painted with brightly coloured religious imagery, and in the main ceiling area we're looking at we can see a depiction of Jesus giving a sermon while people kneel and look up at him and while angels peer down from clouds. Gold trim lines all the architectural elements on view.

Our next stop on our 2017 Baltic cruise would see us spend a weekend in the Russian city of St Petersburg. We booked tours to fill up both days because travelling to Russia on a cruise ship and booking excursions meant you didn't need a visa to head ashore and we didn't know if or when we would ever return. A good move as that's obviously highly unlikely to happen now, naturally.

We started with a highlights tour of the city and that began with a visit to the Church of the Saviour on Spilled Blood. Fabulously decorative outside in a typical Russian Orthodox style designed to mimic St Basil's in Moscow, built on the site of Alexander II's assassination in 1881, but not reconsecrated post-revolution.

We're looking up at a Russian Orthodox church. This design has a main, square section for the most part, attached to which there are circular sections topped with domes and small towers topped with highly-decorated spheres, some gold, some in textured greens and blues and yellows. The top of the building is similarly ornate with larger towers and larger onion domes on top. Many surfaces are tiled and lined with brickwork in contrasting colours to the main building. Windows are tall and thin with arched tops.
