When I have pinned blame on climate change on USian boomers as a generation, it is not simply ageism. It is lament of the fact that they have been in political power for a long time, and they aren't letting go of power. Under their lead, climate change has become the climate catastrophe and we have done little to nothing to avoid it.

The NYTimes just published a graphic that shows their grip on political power; the highest rate of increase on these graphs is in the last 10 years, when the oldest baby-boomers have become septuagenarians:

With time on the x-axis, and number of USian representatives/senators on the y-axis, two side-by-side graphs show how many people in Congress are over 70 years of age. The left graph shows the House of Representatives and the right graph shows the Senate. There are three lines plotted: red for Republicans, blue for Democrats, and bold heavy black for the sum of both parties. All three lines rapidly increase starting in 2000, with the sum (black line) increasing from 20 to 80 members of the House and from 10 to 33 Senators. The last nine years, when the oldest of the baby boomers have become septuagenarians, shows the highest rates of increases for both houses.

In this article they discuss how some researchers studying rural regions found that official estimates of population in these rural regions often vastly undercount, so that there could be 2 or 3x as many people in these regions as reported. Enough to make the global population estimates much more uncertain than they appear to be. #demography #demographics #population #statistics
