Today, my Brazilian mentee taught me about #ovenbirds or joão de barros, birds that build nests of #clay. But it’s not just clay, it’s essentially cob—clay and straw together. It makes me wonder if this is where humans got the idea for cob & adobe.

Great idea Daniel. Cloudy and rain here on the Oregon coast, albeit the clouds parted for several minutes in front of the moon last night. Impressively out of place.
Wish I was at Newark Earthworks again this time. I was there in Oct. 2005 for lunar major.

went for a walk with the new neighbor and said hi to the new #moon cycle we discussed cruel #deforestation and heard #water move under the ice (it is minus 13) which reminded me of the sound of mangroves #earthworks

If I were President, I'd put the armed forces and the young people to work repairing collapsing ecosystems.
“The ultimate end to a growth economy is the same as an analogous growth: cancer. But for national economies, the victims are nature, soils, forests, people, water, and quality of life. There is one, and only one, solution, and we have almost no time to try it. We must turn all our resources to repairing the natural world, and train all our young people to help. They want to. We need to give them this last chance to create forests, soils, clean waters, clean energies, secure communities, stable regions, and to know how to do it from hands-on experience.”

This is how we change the weather.
I just saved 36 images from this excellent video about a #restoration project in Kenya.
I'd like to see similar work being done in #drylands everywhere. #earthworks #rain #Kenya #hydrology #permaculture #rewilding https://youtu.be/vG1H9Sg4lBM
2/ BTW, please do take a look at the data that arises when one searches for the term 'carbon tunnel vision'.
More article quotes:
"Millan is a highly technical & practical scientist, steeped in physics & with an engineer’s stamp. Yet he turns poet when describing how #soil, #water & #plants all work together to recycle water, employing the tercet [composed of 3 lines of poetry¯\_(ツ)_/¯]:
Water begets water, soil is the womb, vegetation is the midwife.
What he means by water begets water is that
healthy landscapes seem to grow water.
Of course, water just can’t be created. There’s a set amount on earth, & though we think of it as spread amongst oceans, lakes, rivers & glaciers, it is also inside living things. Humans are 60% #water birds 75%, fish 70 to 84%. A typical cat weighs in at 67%, while plants & trees are almost entirely water, 80 to 90%. "

@fionag11 Thank you, that is a definite bookmark.
I checked the #Amazon first, where I survey satellite imagery of cleared forest for prehistoric #earthworks, especially geometric enclosures. Seeing the contrast in this region should alarm everyone.

Hmmm.
#RebeccaSolnit shared this image & said "A common response to mention of #renewables is a denunciation of mining for battery materials by people who don't seem to notice that fossil fuel is also mined/extracted -- on a scale that dwarfs everything else."
I seriously wish I knew the actual ratio, which this image does not offer.
There's something to it in that some of the MANY nationwide numbers of heavy equipment already extant, could be making small dams, ponds, wetlands, infiltration systems, #keyline plowing, erosion management, #watershed #restoration, & so on, & would be far better use of a small bit of the remaining oil (most of which, of course, should be left in the ground).
The tools that are destroying #ecosystems can be used for restoration & #rewilding. A bigger outcome (a life-support system ) with far, far less less oil burned.

The goal of the model I’m describing is to “build community,” through activities that create a space where all different types of “people” (birds, humans, water, etc) can connect and build #solidarity, but also experience conflict and learn about being alive… together. I see experimentation with #earthworks and growing different types of plants. I see water flooding fields that we spent a year cultivating. I see black widow spiders living in crevices under tables where humans have desks and machines. I see humans getting together to plant fruit trees, and deer eating all the fruit before the humans get a chance to harvest… I see a sense of learning and transformation of energy that lives within all of us…
I’m so over founding #startups and I hate managing people. So I don’t see myself developing some “strategic plan” or bringing people together to start this. Maybe the vision will occur naturally. Or maybe it already exists somewhere in the world that I have yet to discover.

Above beautiful Church Cove in Gunwalloe, #cornwall lie these large #earthworks. Are they the remains of a Promontory Fort (Cliff Castle) or just #geology combined with windblown sand? #HillfortsWednesday Have a look at the photos by Bladup above and on our page - what do you think?
