The main Reluctance Series antagonist has probably been everywhere in the world and been most every profession, with mother having been her most repeated job. Immortality and always being 24 has its up and down sides.

Wintereyes has traveled all over the Fell Forest with the wolf pack that adopted her, but it's still a just a forest despite the size of the territory. Her parents' farm is just outside its border. Now that she's earned magical fame for befriending a wyvern (and arbitrating a dispute between a farmer, a sneezy so-called red dragon, and an exploded grain silo that had undergone undiscovered fermentation), she now attends a university in a Township—but she's two shy to explore the place because, well, all the people.

I can't make out exactly what's going on behind them, there's a dome? A fishbowl?

Interesting representation of dark-skinned people for 1940 but you'd have to read the story to see if it was related to/analogous to race in the human sense.

Mushroom log or tree stump fountain? Which do you prefer?

Je me lance dans le challenge la semaine prochaine. En attendant, voici les #aquarelle 2024.

Aquarelle. Un personnage de dos au premier plan. Derrière, un feu dont les flammes s'élèvent et créent une forme s'apparentant à un renard. Au dernier plan, la lune bleue.

Blood Over Bright Haven by M. L. Wang

This was a slightly better version of Babel by R. F. Kuang with more of a focus on intersectionality, but it still wasn't fully satisfying. Despite not being marketed as YA, it felt very YA in terms of prose and romance. A little too Baby's First Anti-Colonialist and Anti-Capitalist Fantasy for my taste (but maybe I've just been spoiled by Ursula K. Le Guin). I picked this up because I read a review that compared it to Le Guin, actually, but I'm afraid there's really no comparison.

The setting is certainly imaginative and it is fairly radical in its politics. Compared to Babel, I think it's an interesting choice to have a protagonist who's an ambitious, white feminist, girl boss-y woman who has never considered her complicity in the colonial project before. But Wang is really hamfisted in the same way Kuang is, with entire chapters devoted to hand-holding passages explaining basic concepts like false allyship, capitalist extraction, and white guilt without much subtlety or anything that makes it feel transformative or insightful.
