Bonjour ! 🐦

Web apps are one of the best-kept secrets of the internet. If you haven't tried them before, they are worth giving a go.

There are web apps for almost all Fediverse platforms including Mastodon. You can find out more at:

➡️ fedi.tips/how-to-install-web-a

Web apps are a mixture of website and app store app, combining many of the best features of both. The restrictions imposed by Apple and Google's app stores do not apply to web apps, so web apps tend to get more features more quickly.

Generally most people only need one account on the Fediverse, because the servers talk to each other as if they were on a single network.

However, in some situations and for some purposes you may prefer to use multiple accounts. If you're one of these people, there's a guide to using multiple accounts here:

➡️ fedi.tips/using-multiple-accou

Also see the article on why most people don't need multiple accounts:

@toddalstrom oh je découvre qu'il est possible d'ajouter des expression "Regex" dans les filtres Mastodon !?

L'expression pour Thread me sera sans doute moins utile maintenant qu'il est bien largement défédéré, mais ça ouvre le champ des possible.

EDIT : Zut voilà que je déchante en apprenant que ça l'était jusqu'en 2018 dans l'implémentation officielle ...

FediAlgo, the customizable timeline algorithm / filtering system for your Mastodon feed, is now deployed on Github Pages and can be used from your web browser.

If you want to, you can optionally set some or all of your Mastodon posts to self-delete after a certain amount of time. There's a complete guide to how to do this here:

➡️ fedi.tips/deleting-posts-autom

The guide also answers lots of questions about auto-deletion including its effects and how to adjust its settings.

Bear in mind that deleted posts cannot be restored, they are actually deleted! Be really sure you want to use this feature before you activate it.

Am looking for a new host to move to, not because this one has a lot of down time but because Mastodon . Social refuse to up the 500 character limit and it's getting to be too much of a limitation & too annoying for me, suggestions on hosts welcome (not Aus . Social or Mastodon . Au, I've tried those).

Prerequisites needed:
- Minimum 1000+ character posts
- Minimum 99% uptime

@FediTips

On Mastodon, if you've clicked a "Follow" button and it turns into "Pending" or "Cancel Follow" or "Request Sent", it means the follow hasn't actually happened yet.

Usually it's because the account has follow requests switched on, so you just wait for them to approve your request.

However, sometimes it's due to other reasons, and you may have to do something special to get the follow to work. Lots of info and full instructions at:

Have you seen a :Fediverse: rainbow pentagon thing and wondered what it means?

It's the logo of the Fediverse, the overall network which contains Mastodon, PeerTube, Pixelfed, BookWyrm, OwnCast and other platforms that communicate using a common standard.

There are high quality versions here:

➡️ commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fil (colour)

➡️ commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fil (mono)

Technically there can be no official logo on a decentralised network, but this is the most commonly-used logo.

Use hashtags to get your posts found. Search often only works with hashtags.

Fill your profile with at least some basic information like why you are here. Profiles with no information will get much less followers.

Present yourself with a hashtag like #introduction.

Be respectful. This is not twitter here. Use #AltText for the many blind users here.

You can edit your posts here.

Feel free to correct or add where needed but please keep it simple for non nerds.

The fediverse seems very difficult at beginning. But once you got the basics it gets easy. And once you understood the cool fedi features you will see how retro twitter and bluesky are.

> You have very many alternative fedi-software choices available

Indeed, this site is a software-agnostic place to explore fediverse servers;

fediverse.observer/

There's a (probably incomplete) list of fediverse software choices on;

fediverse.party/en/miscellaneo

There's also lists on delightful.club, but that seems to be down right now.

Just updated the custom emoji guide so that it also explains how to add custom emoji to your profile name:

➡️ fedi.tips/what-are-custom-emoj

If you're unsure what custom emoji are, the guide explains all about them and how to use them.

TL:DR - Custom emoji are special emoji added by your server admin that you can use in your posts. People on other servers can see your custom emoji, so you can add cool images in posts that they can't (unless their admin added the same ones) :rickroll:
