dana hilliotI hadn't commented at all on the latest episodes in French political life. Not because I'm not interested (though...), but above all because, given the composition of the Assembly (and even more so, the results of the legislative elections), the match seems to be decided in any case. There is no possibility of a full NFP (left) government governing the country tomorrow. At worst, we're going to get the same combo as before the elections (even a little further to the right, if that's imaginable), or at best (but then a “”“”mieux“”“” with lots of quotation marks) some kind of compromise coupling between the centrist wing of the PS and the right. If, by some sort of strange act, Macron were to accept the candidacy of a prime minister from the NFP (with the "Insoumis" in it), that candidate would be immediately censured. It's totally logical: the assembly, like the country, is very much on the right, that's all. (and there isn't a single sheet of paper between Darmanin's cronies and those of Wauquiez, Ciotti or Marine le Pen - to still believe, after years of racist neoliberalism, that the self-proclaimed center is really “at the center” of anything, is to have failed to follow political events for the past 7 years - of course they're made to get along, why should what was true yesterday become false today?)The Left hasn't won anything at all (apart from the highly honorary title of "leading party" in France - and even that's debatable, given the fragile cohesion of this so-called "party" - a hodgepodge of circumstances really. Strictly speaking, the leading party in (f)Rance is the Rassemblement Nationale (Far right), by far).For people (really) on the left, there's this disappointment that's almost inherent in the way democracy itself works. Since, say, the end of the Second World War, if you look at successive governments in Europe, the vast majority have tended towards the center or the right. Most have been conservative. And, with the irresistible wave of neoliberalism since Thatcher and Reagan, even social democrats, when they come to power, settle for “policies of adaptation” to the dictates of the global market and the principles of neoliberalism. One of the few elected governments that was truly left-wing, at least in its program, Siriza in Greece, was dismantled in a matter of weeks by the European Troika. In my opinion, this event shattered many of the hopes of truly left-wing voters to win power. You may say that recently, this “tendency towards the center” of liberal democracies has been undermined by the election of far-right governments across the continent. Except that, economically and socially, it's hard to see how neoliberals differ from far-right populists: Meloni's success with Europe's right-wingers bears witness to this. The left, the real left, anti-neoliberal, with an interventionist, even downright socialist, program, is politically bled dry. Not just electorally, but because it is incapable of once again assuming a position that is anything other than an adaptation to neoliberalism. Since the fall of the Soviet Union, and the “third ways” of France's PS or Tony Blair's Labour, etc., and the fading of the alter-globalization movements (rapidly cut off from the political class likely to govern), the only option that seems available is compromise politics à la Pedro Sánchez or a supposedly “left” center that no longer has much of a “left” about it, like English Labour. The real problem, which we're up to our necks in, and in a dramatic way for the poorest and most racialized people in particular, is that the only agenda that counts, the one on the basis of which all the parties position themselves, is the one set by the neoliberal conservatives: it's on the basis of this agenda that we determine what is up for debate and what is not a matter of political choice: neoliberal free-market principles, growth, productivism, employment at all costs, budgetary austerity, “the non-negotiable European way of life” have long ceased to be part of it, nor has the building of a “fortress Europe”, let alone “climate policies”.In fact, for all these reasons, the left has never seemed so far from power. Worse still, the changes that seem most likely in the future, and the near future, promise instead the accession to power of far-right rulers - more or less disguised as neoliberal conservatives. It's all very well to bash the current left, complaining about its procrastination. But in reality, the damage was done a long time ago.
