We just got back from our "waterfest," backpacking in the White Mountains, New Hampshire! Hiked up two rivers, crossing many small tributaries. Camped near one of the streams, having meals by it and falling asleep listening to the sounds of rushing water. And, the new tent held up against the rain at night! Good day!

A gnarly old tree straight out of a gothic rainstorm at midnight. Yet, during the day, I noticed all the new growth surrounding it.

I try to be new in some way each day. Some days, life gives me all the new I can handle.

It isn’t enough to be new, we need to be new again.

In a pine forest, a dead tree with dead branches that look like skeleton arms stands a couple of people tall, but around it are new trees that don’t stand half as tall yet. The sky is partly cloudy.

Fantastic light yesterday as a cold/storm front approached. Zoomed view, looking across a grassy area, kept more or less low by cattle in summer (not in there yet) with many low poplar suckers in the foreground, just leafing out. This spot is shaded by poplar trees to the left, which we see only part of. These trees are bright green with new leaves, much of what we see in their own shade, though light bits stick out illuminated by the sun off to the left. To the right we see the lower part of a large dark spruce tree, just a hint of sun on the left part of its branches. Considerably farther back some low willows, not fully leafed out with bright green leaves, rise from knee high dried grass, and farther still mixed woods with brightly newly leafed poplars dominating. Lit by the sun, they stand out dramatically against the dark blue grey sky behind.

Across a narrow open area of dry grass, a youngish mixed wooded wetland area of lowish willows, and young to mid-size poplar and birch and a few young spruce rise in a dense tangle of growth. The trees and bushes have young or not even fully emerged leaves, fresh bright green, lit by sunlight. A few poplar branches with small leaves dangle in from upper right and to the left we see part of a shadowed dark spruce. Farther back we see a bit of a more mature mixed wood of poplar and spruce. The sky behind is filled with active cloud, dark and heavy to lower left, white above fading to wisps upper centre and right with bits of blue sky showing.

Meanwhile, as always seems to be the case, I’ve an inhuman number of tasks to accomplish today.

Yet, I’ll get them done. I thrive on pushing myself unmercifully, I guess. Here we go…

Nature’s Masterpiece
Standing in front of Multnomah Falls feels like stepping into a fairytale. Towering cliffs, lush green forests, and the sound of cascading water—pure magic.

The weather window has opened up a bit (i.e., less rain) and I'm heading off to go #backpacking in the White #Mountains, #NewHampshire-- my first such trip this season. Managed to convince my "partner-in-crime" (Lori) to head into the wilderness with me in spite of the damp forecast. Will try out our new tent that fits two adults (advertised as a "3-person" tent). Will be #hiking all the way up a stream to near its origin and camp near the waterfalls. See you on the other side!

Yesterday did provide me a nice walk in the rain in the morning.

For the quasi lazy day, I took a look at particular issues with other books, & have a great draft of a blurb for Book2.

No wonder I haven’t hiked in May before. It’s windy, muddy, & cold.

Do you agree that public lands need to stay just that: PUBLIC?
Then contact your reps & congressfolk now, because they are voting to start selling off public lands to the highest bidder.

At midnight on Tuesday, May 6, the House Natural Resources Committee passed legislation for around 460,000 acres of federal public land in Nevada and Utah to be transferred to local governments or sold to private entities. These are primarily National Forest and Bureau of Land Management lands.The amendment is part of a sweeping tax cut package. It omits public comment and environmental assessment, leaving the stakeholders, the American people, completely out of the process of how OUR land is managed. If it can happen in Utah and Nevada, it can happen anywhere.

Call or write to your House Representative and remind them that our public lands belong to the American people and they should be protected, not sold. Here is a suggested script:

"I am a constituent calling from (zip code). My name is _______. I am calling to urge (your Representative) to oppose the budget reconciliation bill provision authorizing the sale of public lands. Public lands should be protected and preserved, not sold off to fund tax breaks or for any reason. Public lands belong to the American people!"

(And yes, #LandBack would be better, but let's at least not fucking sell it to private interests!)

Critter report: My backyard buddy Dougie the Douglas squirrel, a smallish beaver I've now named Spiky, two huge beavers we suspect are the matriarch and patriarch of the colony, we see them around the lodge lately, and a male hairy woodpecker whacking away. #Hiking #AltText #GetOutside

The cutest little brown squirrel sitting on a fence, it's long tail curled up along its back up to its head, a quartering side view showing one of its big eyes brightly.

Smallish beaver angling toward the camera as it swims slowly in a creek, with the hair stop its head quite spiky like a punk rocker, It's darned cute, you can see its big black nose, one small eye and one cut roundish ear.

Everything’s abloom in the PNW right now and although I suck at macro photography, lately I make an (feeble) effort. Mainly because the stinkin’ migrating tweeties refuse to sit still. So here are great camas (extremely important to indigenous people), Pacific ninebark and western trumpet honeysuckle, all NW native species spotted on the morning ramble. #Bloomscrolling #Hiking #GetOutside #AltText

Pretty lavender blossoms, small with yellow pestles, in various states of bloom, still budding on top, along a tall stem, maybe three feet high. The plant is in a grassy meadow, with another in the background. An extremely important species to indigenous people of the Northwest, who cooked the bulbs in large quantities.

A circular cluster of brilliant red, trumpet shaped blossoms of honeysuckle with yellow pestles. It is held in a hand above a leafy green background. Hummingbirds love the stuff.

White and pink round blossoms of the shrub Pacific ninebark that are covered in hair-like frills. Some are more mature and colorful than others and they are surrounded by green leaves. They are unusual blossoms in round clusters.

It’s been a while…

Sometimes, life gets in the way. This spring is the first in many years that we’re not on the Lofoten Islands, but exploring the Swiss mountains instead.

While we’re busy planning the upcoming summer season (some tours are already online and bookable beanywhere.ch), we can’t help but revisit some memories from the wild, windswept North.
