Saint Luke's on Bain Street in the East End of Glasgow. Built as a church in 1836, it was designed by James Wylson. It was gutted by fire in the 1920s and was reconstructed by J.M. Munro and Son. By the early 2000s, it had closed, and after lying empty for several years, it was turned into a music and arts venue, bar and restaurant in the 2010s.

When we lose old buildings, we lose not just a work of art and an element of our collective history, we also lose part of the connection between the people and their city, and once lost this connection can be very difficult to get back.
I think this shows just quite how much Glasgow's architecture is an important part of the lives of its citizens, and in way which can be hard for anyone who did not grow up in the city to imagine or understand.
This is one of the things which annoys me quite so much about the destruction of Glasgow's old buildings by developers who dismiss them as being of no importance simply because they are not a Mackintosh or a 'Greek' Thomson.

The beautiful, but rather run-down, Castle Chambers on the corner of West Regent Street and Renfield Street in Glasgow. Designed by Frank Burnet and Boston in a Free Clasaical style, this building was constructed in 1898 for publicans G. and J. MacLachlan.

87 Carlton Place in Glasgow. Built in 1857 and designed by John Burnet Senior, as the coat of arms at the top suggests, it was originally home to a branch of the Bank of Scotland.

There are 18 walks detailed in it which cover the city's architecture, history and social development and take in the city centre, the West End, Maryhill, the East End, and a number of areas on the Southside. In all, there's 43 miles (73 km) of walks ranging in length from 1 mile (1.6 km) to just over 4 miles (6.5 km). All are easily accessible by public transport.
Time for an update on my book of walking tours around Glasgow. I've just finished the revisions suggested by the editior and have sent it off for a final proof copy to be printed. Barring any major issues with that, it should be available by the end of April.
