#Judges use #contempt to bring a party into compliance, usually by ratcheting up measures from #fines to #jail. Once the party complies, the penalties cease.

In 2022, when #Trump was out of office, he was held in contempt & fined $10k by a NY state judge for each day that he failed to produce documents that were subpoenaed in a civil probe of his private business practices that was led by the NYAG. Trump eventually complied after paying $110k.

Huh, I just accidentally found out I have no #criminal history in #california.

They can only look back seven years, and I went to #jail about seven years ago.

I told a place I had a record while doing the interviews for an internship, who did a background check and said they didn't find anything, and that next time I apply somewhere I can say I don't have a record if not hired by them.

They don't care anyway cuz it was for #drugs and it's a recovery counselor internship!

Lawyers for #Newark, #NewJersey Mayor #RasBaraka said on Thurs they would file motions to dismiss a charge that he had trespassed at a privately run federal #immigration detention center there last week.

#Baraka, who is running for the Democratic nomination for governor in a crowded field, faces a misdemeanor charge of trespassing at #DelaneyHall, an offense that carries a maximum penalty of 30 days in #jail.

The class-action lawsuit that led to the takeover, known as Nunez v. City of New York, was settled in June 2015 & required that the jails, particularly #RikersIsland, be overseen by a court-appointed monitor who would issue regular reports on conditions there but would wield no direct power to effect change.

Through those reports, Judge Swain was given an extensive history of the cyclical nature of the #jail system’s problems.

A NYT investigation in 2021 found that guards are often stationed in inefficient ways that fail to protect inmates. And although the #jail system has consistently been the most well-staffed in the United States — there is roughly one uniformed officer for each inmate at Rikers, according to city data — an unlimited sick leave policy & other uses of leave have meant that staffing can drop to dangerous levels.

The official, called a remediation manager, will work with the #NYC correction commissioner, but be “empowered to take all actions necessary” to turn around the city’s #jails, Judge Swain wrote.

“While the necessary changes will take some time, the court expects to see continual progress toward these goals,” she wrote.

A federal judge overseeing #NYC’s #jails took #RikersIsland out of the city’s control on Tues, ordering that an outside official be appointed to make major decisions regarding the troubled & violent #jail complex.

The judge, Laura Taylor Swain, said in a 77-page ruling that the official would report directly to her & would not be a city employee, turning aside Mayor #EricAdams’ efforts to maintain control of the lockups.

#Trump, a [purely self-interested] #Republican, is also trying to #deport some pro-Palestinian #international #students at #US #schools, saying their presence could *harm* US #ForeignPolicy interests [utter crap].

The #protesters in the library also demanded the release of #MahmoudKhalil, a #Palestinian activist & #Columbia graduate student who remains in a Louisiana immigrant #jail after he was among the first to be #arrested for #deportation.

#mentalhealth treatment in the #usa is absolutely horrifying.

I had an easier time in #jail than some behavioral #health treatment centers.

One in #losangeles I was assaulted randomly FOUR times in two weeks by absolute lunatics who should have been separated from people dealing with stuff like #ptsd and suicidal ideation like me, but weren't.

I wasn't randomly assaulted a single time in jail for six months. The jail guards were nicer than the hospital staff, too.
