if you come across the CTI logo, buy with confidence - I can’t think of a single dud in that catalogue

CTI was Creed Taylor’s label, recording in the studio of and engineered by the legendary Rudy van Gelder of Blue Note fame - most are fusion jazz, and many funk-oriented and often sampled. many are big band arrangements with a roster of legends including Ron Carter, Steve Gadd, Billy Cobham, Jack DeJohnette, Jon Faddis, George Benson, Hubert Laws, Airto, and the list goes on and on

50 jazz tracks for your streaming shuffle, no.1

Dave Brubeck. Take Five

While, well known beyond jazz circles, this is a classic which offers a great introduction to how jazz can be both avant-garde & accessible. Linking up an idiosyncratic rhythm with percussive piano & great solos, this is a good place to start our exploration of what jazz has to offer.

Today a new series of recommendations for your streaming shuffle starts.

After the vote of Easter weekend, I will be sharing 50 tracks to help you explore jazz music if you're not familiar with it & want to see what the genre entails.

the posts will appear under #JazzIntro. which you can follow for a daily recommendation

There may be some (slight) crossover with #KillerCuts but I'm aiming for a shuffle that will be a good introduction to what jazz encompasses - enjoy.

Saw Hiromi (Uhehara) / Sonicwonder last night.

As usual she was a little elf, jump up and down and moving between her three keyboards - reminding me of Amy Poehler when she was in the Upright Citizens Brigade.

It was mostly pieces from her latest album "Out There", but I did pick up elements from some of her much earlier pieces, such as "Old Castle", especially in her solo number.

Each time I've seen/heard her she has moved a bit further away from "melodic" towards more abstract jazz. This is not bad, but given my weak sense of rhythm, time, and tone, for me this means a struggle.

Overall it was very enjoyable. The man on the trumpet is amazing - and like many modern forms of old instruments - rather more hooked to electronics than I would have expected. But the results were quite impressive, albeit loud (we were in the 2nd row, in other words, very close.)

Below is my favorite track from the new album, but they did not play it last night.

Today in Labor History April 22, 1922: Jazz legend Charles Mingus was born on this day. His career spanned three decades. He collaborated with Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Herbie Hancock. Mingus considered Parker one of the greatest innovators in jazz history, but he was also annoyed by all the pretenders who followed. Consequently, he titled a song "If Charlie Parker Were a Gunslinger, There'd Be a Whole Lot of Dead Copycats." On his most famous album, Mingus Ah Um, he paid tribute to Lester Young on his song "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat.” He also recorded on that album the instrumental version of "Fables of Faubus," a protest against segregationist Arkansas governor Orval Faubus.

The “Original Fables of Faubus,” with vocals, is shown in this youtube video. youtu.be/QT2-iobVcdw
