May 20th 1873

On 20 May 1873, 16 women from Ascott-under-Wychwood in Oxfordshire, England, were sent to prison for their role in forming the Agricultural Workers' Union and became known as the Ascott martyrs. Local farm workers had joined the union, so the landowner sacked them and instead hired workers from the nearby village of Ramsden.

poor working conditions drove increasing numbers of Finns to the Industrial Workers of the World (#IWW). In the 1920s, Finns formed the largest individual ethnic group within the organisation. The IWW’s catch phrases were #directaction, #sabotage and #generalstrike. Music was used in the battle against capitalism by the IWW: “The Singing Union”.

Labor Notes · California Educators Sync Up Negotiations for More LeveragePublic school educators in 32 union locals across California are joining forces to maximize their power in a campaign called “We Can’t Wait.” It covers 77,000 educators—about a quarter of the California Teachers Association’s total membership—serving a million students. The campaign started with 11 locals that worked to align their contract expiration dates for the end of June: Anaheim, Berkeley, Los Angeles, Natomas, Oakland, Richmond, Sacramento, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose, and Twin Rivers. And it quickly spread from there.
