I overheard one of the ladies who brought in her therapy dog speak to a young boy who was nervous about reading.

She said, "Ohh, Skye here doesn't care if you read in English or Spanish or are a good reader or nervous about reading. He can't understand you. He's a dog. But he loooooves to be read to. Loves hearing your voice. You just read whatever you like as well as you're able to and Skye will listen to you intently and lovingly."

And now I'm crying.

At the local library where they're having a "Read to Dogs" event.

Kids will come in and read outloud to dogs. It's a way to learn reading and pronunciation and public speaking. Parents will bring in very young children and read to both the kids and the dogs. The dogs love the attention. Local towns folks volunteer and bring their very calm and trained dogs in to be read to and give attention to children. The librarians facilitate through scheduling and handing kids coming in and out.

It's a relaxing day at the library.

Bij de bibliotheek van de Anarchistische Groep Amsterdam (AGA) kun je tegen een kleine borg boeken lenen. Er is keuze uit enkele honderden titels in verschillende talen (Nederlands, Engels, Turks, Spaans, Frans, Duits). De collectie omvat theoretische en praktische boeken over onderwerpen als geschiedenis, arbeid, kraken, ecologie, antifascisme & antiracisme, kunst & cultuur en gevangenisstrijd. De meeste boeken zijn geschreven door anarchisten of vanuit een anarchistisch perspectief, maar er zijn ook boeken die niet geschreven zijn door anarchisten en die ook niet expliciet over anarchisme gaan, maar vanwege de ideeën van de schrijver/-fster toch een plaats in de anarchistische bibliotheek verdienen. Ook ligt er een grote hoeveelheid onafhankelijke informatie ter inzage in de vorm van tijdschriften, zoals De As, Buiten de Orde (Vrije Bond), De Fabel van de Illegaal, De Nar, Uitbraak (ABC Gent) en Freedom.

De anarchistische bibliotheek is open iedere zaterdag van 14 tot 18 uur en donderdag avond van 19:00 tot 22:00 in Infokafee Bollox, 1e Schinkelstraat 14-16 (tel.: 0206790712).

Boeken Lenen

Boeken kunnen gratis worden geleend voor een periode van vier weken tegen betaling van een borg van €10,- die wordt ingehouden als het boek met schade (anders dan door lezen, bijv. waterschade) wordt teruggebracht. Telefonisch verlengen is één keer mogelijk. Bij zoek raken van het boek moet €20,- worden betaald om het boek te kunnen vervangen.

Anarchistische groep Amsterdam

De AGA is een groep mensen die samenwerken voor het creëren van oplossingen en alternatieven voor de problemen die zij tegenkomen op het werk, op school of ergens anders in de maatschappij. Uitgangspunt hierbij is het anarchisme. De AGA strijdt voor zelfbestuur en een wereld zonder uitbuiting of onderdrukking waarin geproduceerd wordt naar behoefte en niet voor winst.

Spreekuur

De bibliotheek is ook de plek om in contact te komen met de AGA en ideeën uit te wisselen of gewoon een kopje koffie te komen drinken.

The Anarchist Library.

Every Saturday the anarchist library opens from 14.00 – 18.00 and every Thursday from 19:00 – 22:00 in the Bollox, a small cafe situated in the beautiful courtyard of the Binnenpret. This initiative has been running for over 10 years. We have an extensive collection ranging from anarchist classics to the lastest publications on economic theory, queer perspectives, radical art, government infiltration and squatting. Other topics are anti-fascism, animal liberation, feminism, ecology, history, biographies and prison struggle. We have books in Dutch, English, Spanish, French and German. You can find books about and by radical thinkers, books you won’t find in any other library, books to sharpen the mind and to initiate thought and debate. Books that give a different perspective on the world as we know it and enlighten us about the fact that another world is possible and necessary.

Borrowing books.

Books can be borrowed for free for a period of four weeks, leaving a 10 euro deposit per book. If a book is damaged, the deposit won’t be returned. You can extend once for four extra weeks. If you lose the book, you pay 20 euro so we are able to replace it.

Today in Labor History May 14, 1771: Utopian-socialist Robert Owen was born on this day in Wales. In the early 1800s, he made a fortune in textiles. However, he tried to run his mills on higher principles than greed. One of his reforms was to offer prices at his company store that were only slightly higher than their wholesale cost. This was in marked contrast to his competitors, who paid their workers only in scrip and charged exorbitant prices at their company stores. In 1810, Owen implemented the eight-hour workday for his employees. And in 1817, he came up with the slogan, “Eight hours labor, eight hours recreation, eight hours rest.” He also provided free schools for the children of factory workers.

In 1824, he travelled to America and invested his fortune in an experimental socialistic commune at New Harmony, Indiana. It only survived for two years. However, it changed many aspects of American culture. Residents created the first public library and public school system open to both boys and girls. The town also became an important center of scientific research in the mid-1800s.
