I know this a stretch, but it's the only time I've seen this little butterfly, & I could only get one picture before it whizzed off.

Superficially, it looks like a holly blue (Celastrina argiolus), but it's smaller, & has some orange markings on the underwing, which C. argiolus doesn't.

I'm pretty sure it's a female short-tailed blue (Cupido argiades), & hope to see one again 🤞

A fairly distant shot of a small butterfly sitting on grass and clover with its wings folded, seen mostly from behind. But you can make out the pattern of black spots on the mostly light blue / white underwings, with two tall-tale orange patches at the edge of the lower wing, identifying the species.

Back to finding new species, this small bee is from the Colletes genus, known as plasterer, cellophane, or polyester bees for the plastic secretion they coat their nests with 🐝

There are many species, but on balance, this may well be an ivy bee (C. hederae). The abdomen stripes aren't as orange as usual, but there are plenty of pictures showing pale stripes like these 🧐

Finally! 🙂

Almost three months after seeing my first scorpionfly in the garden, I saw & photographed a male today 🦂🪰

In the side-on photo, you can see the magnificent proboscis shared by both genders, while the male also has the curved genitals which give the genus its name.

The thin, caliper-shaped hypovalves in the top down photo suggest that it's a common scorpionfly (P. communis).
