#mammogram

I'm grudgingly catching up on my preventative health care today, booking a Mole Map appointment and signing up for BreastScreen Aotearoa.

And if anyone else in NZ is 45 and over and wants to sign up for a free mammogram here is the link I'm sticking it here because it took me WAY too long to find it on my own.

I may have just turned 45 but I am way overdue for both because
a) I had a melanoma at age 29 and
b) I have a breast cancer in my family history but not immediate enough family to qualify for a funded early mammogram (was my grandma and my aunt, but they only care if it was your mum or sister).

It’s 2 years today since I learned I have breast cancer. I had no signs or symptoms, but a routine screening mammogram showed changes. Further tests revealed I had an aggressive cancer, but early detection meant it hadn’t spread yet. I had surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy (plus my fair share of complications!). As far as can be told, I am currently free of cancer.

Please, if you are eligible have a mammogram. It might save your life - it did in my case!

#Keyword is #comfortable. Why can't they 'fess up & admit having one #breast at a time #compressed in a #vice like grip is painful. We're told #tenderness & a small amount of #bruising after a #mammogram isn't usually concerning...to whom? Nice to be able to say that if you haven't just been squished.
Top off in front of strangers is bad enough but if they did something about the #painful process more #women would #attend. Improve #Xrays save more #lives.

Another mammogram done. Damn, that hurt. I sent a pic to my BFF in Edmonton of the BC Cancer screening mammography sign so she knew I was going for a mammogram.

Her response: Jesus haven’t you endured enough pain??!

Right?! That’s why I’d been delaying it over 7 months since receiving the letter.

They let me take the walker right in so I was holding one hand on the torture machine and one on my walker.

I searched for a discussion on Reddit about how painful a #mammogram is and, uh.

Let’s preface this by saying: don’t avoid mammograms. Screening is important.

But for those agreeing that it doesn’t feel as bad as a blood pressure cuff: wow, that was not my experience.

I haven’t the faintest idea how thin they squished my breasts, because my eyes don’t see that angle, but it certainly felt profoundly terrible for the approx 5 seconds it took to get each of the four photos.

Well, that escalated quickly! #medical

I went to get a #mammogram today. They said it would be four images total, but it quickly turned to over ten images.

The technician asked me, “Are you OK? Does it hurt too much? Now you know what women go through!" LOL I was already thinking that, though.

After my mammogram, she noticed I wasn’t scheduled for anything else so she left to consult the radiologist and came back saying that I needed to get a more recent breast ultrasound, too.

This year's #mammogram is officially done!

No, it's not fun. Yes, it can get painful.

But so much less painful than #BreastCancer.

I've helped two people get through breast cancer: my mom, who was in her mid-60s at the time...

...and my good friend M., who was in her mid-30s. She and I are the same age. Thankfully, M. is now 10 years in remission.

So, if you're in your 40s, GET YOUR #MAMMOGRAMS, Y'ALL. Just do it. It could save your life and prevent terrible grief for those who love you. ❤️

#FDA sets new guidelines: new rules will require #mammogram providers nationwide to notify women if they have dense breast tissue and recommend that they consult with a doctor about whether they need additional screening. #health

Want to know what #healthcare is like in #Ontario right now? I found a lump in my breast in September. It's been over 2 months since my #mammogram & my doctor still doesn't have the results. I really want to thank the 57% of eligible voters who didn't bother to show up & vote in June & instead let less than 18% of the population decide the future of our province. Your inaction will literally kill people.

@DrLindseyFitzharris @TealCartoons Hi! So glad you got that #mammogram.
Older women get short shrift too...they try to screen you every other year. I went at 19 months to get a DEXA and thought wtf get the mash and flash too.
Fortunately my tumor was small.
I had whole breast radiation. If you want to talk please feel free to ask. Stretching is important. It's been a year and I still have to do it or things start hurting. All best to you! Joan
