Being able to #migrate your #followers to another account on a different #instance is a beautiful feature. Everyone should try it once, if only just for fun!

Yes, you can't take your posts with you. But your old account won't be deleted after #migration (unless you choose to). It will just be marked as superseded. All your posts will keep being accessible, can be found via search, can be linked to etc.

Btw, I migrated from #Fosstodon after some similar bs happened in 2023.

Hello Fediverse! #introduction

dComms is a project by eQualitie that provides a curated and secure deployment of decentralized communication tools for civil society including #Mastodon #Peertube #Element #DeltaChat etc. #dComms creates small-world networks for reliable communications in low-bandwidth environments, resistant to censorship and shutdowns.

We are now actively working on server deployments in partnership with NGOs in 5 countries and help local communities #migrate to the Fediverse

I always loved to be able to backup of the home folder on #linux and basically take that from one install to another without loosing anything important. But with #flatpak installed inside the user folder, it adds another layer of magic. I was already amazed, when I realized the appeal of user partitions on linux, some years ago. Windows has nothing comparable.

The way to migrate is built into the Mastodon web app.
Go to Preferences, click on Import & Export, click Export, click Request an archive.

It will take some time, but you'll get a download link. Download to your computer. BTW, this is how you backup your Masto-life. You should do it often.

The page also includes lists of follows, mutes, block, etc. These are CSVs and they are human readable in Excel or Numbers.

Create an account on another instance ASAP.

Return to Preferences on the new instance. Click on Import & Export. Click on Import. Click Upload and specify your downloaded archive.

You can also import "Data." I think (but don't know) that this will restore lists of things like who you follow. Seems dicey to me since following is regulated... Worth a try, maybe it requests that you follow. Try it.

DO THIS NOW. Then toot to your timeline that you have a new account. Those who are interested can follow it.

I may have missed a detail, so the sooner you try this or Google it further, the better off you will be.

HTH

Most #birds #migrate at night, when it’s more difficult to identify them visually and while most birders are in bed. For over a century, acoustic monitoring has hovered tantalizingly out of reach as a method that would solve #ornithologists’ woes...software called BirdVoxDetect, the result of a collaboration between New York University, the #Cornell Lab of #Ornithology, and École Centrale de Nantes, identifies the bird and classifies it to the #species level. technologyreview.com/2024/12/1 #migration

gov.uk/check-uk-visa is awesome and gov.uk/check-uk-visa/y/usa/wor probably applies to many people considering the UK.

I'm going for UK naturalisation soon, whenever I can pass the awful Life in the UK Test. (New residents don't need to think about LitUK prep or anything, but the fees for any application are expensive.

You also generally have to apply from your country of nationality (/ residence?) in advance, but I will check on that. Might have changed, too, tbf.

gov.uk/entering-staying-uk
Anyone with professional qualifications, especially "Health and care professional, Digital technology professional, Academic or researcher, Work in arts or culture, Professional sportsperson, Religious worker, I want to start a business."

gov.uk/skilled-worker-visa
According to gov.uk/skilled-worker-visa/you, "The minimum salary for the type of work you’ll be doing is whichever is the highest of:

£38,700 per year, OR the ‘going rate’ for the type of work you’ll be doing."
I work(ed) in IT and never came close to that. Unfortunately, this particular route is not likely to include most people under 35, except maybe the furries or something. (But other VISAs might be fine.)

gov.uk/check-uk-visa/y/usa/wor has a good amount of detail to start with.

However, the current nickname of 'TERF Island' is worth bearing in mind. If people have british or irish family, probably still less disruptive to come here, but their HRT is very likely to be disrupted following the stil-upheld Cass Review (or report, icr).

People from or with Commonwealth Country family or birth certificates are also well-placed to come, but again, bear in mind the Windrush scandal, where the gov insisted on trying to deport people who were here perfectly lawfully ffs.

Any EU people gov.uk/settled-status-eu-citiz
