So I visited someone who used to work at a hospital in the '90s and I got this hand-made #vintage #pcb .

The writing is
Coronametrics Front End/Ultrasound
the other side has 02/83 , could be a year.

No solder mask, traces at weird angles, no clear grid, rusty screw.

What computer would it slot into?

There's more in the basement it came from if anyone's interested :P I even saw one with a bunch of DIP ICs.

SQUEEEEEZE number 2. I ended up upgrading the PCB design rules to allow for smaller plugged via and using the 0.1mm trace/space rules. The latter is the default offered by JLCPCB these days which blows my mind! The via in pad stuff does not add very much to the overall PCB price when made in quantity anyways. And I can now kick the can of dealing with 0201 down the road a bit longer. (I mainly dread tuning the stencil apertures, the rest is not really an issue.) #kicad #pcb #electronics

Did I spend my evening designing that board, placing and routing 129 leds by hand?

Yup, I absolutely did :)

I kinda like that kind of repetitive job, I find it to be a good relaxing time (once every 6 months, I would definitely learn how to automate it if I had to do that every day :)

Well, technically it worked. The laser cut can go through the pcb (if there is no copper).
But the process is very slow, and the result badly burnt. I'll have to figure out something else.

I think I started working on the design of a linear clock in 2016. Over the years, I made at least 5 different designs, and countless color pattern experiments. I guess the next version can wait a little longer :)

ok, copper tape glass PCB test results are in. just did a small test layout with some traces and test footprints. exposure and development of the etch resist went well. 7.5 minutes under my UV box and development in water with a random amount of sodium carbonate in it.

etching went… less than well. The glue on the tape does not seem to stand up to the copper chloride etchant very well and there was severe under etch all around the edges and a whole bunch of delamination. might have to try a different way of attaching copper foil. one option might be to just use the same material as the etch resist as glue…

oh yeah, and even though the glue was kinda destroyed by the etchant there is still a layer of glue on all the bare glass spots :I

I'm immensely proud of my 11 year old who designed his first #pcb in #kicad and the assembled board arrived today. I gave a lot of guidance on the schematic side and practical help for the PCB placements, but it was all him apart from that.

Can you tell what he wants to build?

"Die DOsen Stapler" (DDoS) is a #student robotics team that took part in the Eurobot 2025 competition, marking their first participation in the event.

This year’s challenge, "The Show Must Go On", involved building autonomous robots capable of performing a range of stage-themed tasks within a defined arena.

The team developed their #robot from the ground up: mechanical structure, control systems and electronics.
