R.J. Faas<p>I had a Newton MessagePad 120 back in the day. It felt very ahead of its time but it wasn't without its quirks and issues.<br> <br>It would've been interesting to see the platform evolve, where it'd be with today's tech and how it got there.</p><p> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/AppleHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AppleHistory</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/newton" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>newton</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/vintageMac" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>vintageMac</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/retorcomputing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>retorcomputing</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/classicmac" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>classicmac</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/lostpotential" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>lostpotential</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/stevejobs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>stevejobs</span></a></p>
Thankful Machine<p>Okay <a href="https://oldbytes.space/tags/ps1" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ps1</span></a> developers, I have questions about the fixed-point representations of various coordinates in PsyQ.</p><p>SVECTOR are 16-bit (1,3,12)? and used for local coordinates, rotation, light, and color. Right?</p><p>VECTOR use 32-bit (1,31,0)?</p><p>Q: MATRIX has a 32-bit (1,31,0) translation vector! What?? How do you apply a MATRIX to an SVECTOR and not overflow? Did one always end up with a 32-bit VECTOR after applying matrices? Does this imply that world coordinates are always VECTOR?</p><p>Q: I can imagine fitting character models in 16-bit fixed-point coordinates, but how did people in practice keep track of a character's position and rotation _in the world_ after scaling and rotating characters into place (before projection)?</p><p>Q: Does anyone know the actual type representations between object =&gt; world =&gt; camera =&gt; screen space and reasonable ranges of coordinates on the PS1?</p><p><a href="https://oldbytes.space/tags/retrogaming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>retrogaming</span></a> <a href="https://oldbytes.space/tags/retorcomputing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>retorcomputing</span></a> <a href="https://oldbytes.space/tags/retroprogramming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>retroprogramming</span></a> <a href="https://oldbytes.space/tags/psxdev" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>psxdev</span></a> <a href="https://oldbytes.space/tags/gpu" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gpu</span></a> <a href="https://oldbytes.space/tags/programming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>programming</span></a> <a href="https://oldbytes.space/tags/gamedev" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gamedev</span></a> <a href="https://oldbytes.space/tags/3d" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>3d</span></a></p>
