Adam Cook<p>The reason that many other actual <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/SelfDrivingCar" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SelfDrivingCar</span></a> companies have employed <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Lidar" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Lidar</span></a> sensors in their vehicles from the start (pre-validation) is to hedge their bets.</p><p>And for a novel safety-critical systems operating in a very complex ODD, hedging your bets is likely smart.</p><p>But, again, the job is never done.</p><p>And while <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Waymo" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Waymo</span></a> might be pleased with their 5th Generation hardware suite today, their ODDs (both present and future) will demand a 6th Generation. And a 7th. And so on.</p>
Adam Cook<p>So, is a <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Lidar" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Lidar</span></a> sensor required for a <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/SelfDrivingCar" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SelfDrivingCar</span></a>? </p><p>I don't know.</p><p>Ask the ODD!</p><p>And another thing to keep in mind is that <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/SafetyCritical" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SafetyCritical</span></a> systems must always be kept open for modification.</p><p>The job of interpreting the demands of the ODD is never done.</p><p>You will never interpret it correctly the first time.</p><p>This is why **continuous** (that is, never-ending) validation is so important - and expensive.</p><p>Sorry, self-driving car investors.</p><p>There is no bright finish line.</p>
