Now, <a href="https://uwyn.net/tags/Gentoo" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Gentoo</span></a> Linux is one of the biggest independent distributions.</p><p>2/4</p>

Working around the copyright generally involves rewriting the recipe in your own words.</p><p>Likewise, an *algorithm* can't be copyrighted, but an implementation of it written as code can be. Working around the copyright similarly involves doing a re-implementation of it, writing the code yourself.</p><p>The crap part is when we allowed algorithms to be de facto *patented* (even though they legally shouldn't be!) by allowing the "application of" loophole to be stretched almost infinitely large. IMO it's the patent issue, not copyright, that is really problematic w/r/t software.<br><a href="https://mefi.social/tags/IntellectualProperty" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>IntellectualProperty</span></a> <a href="https://mefi.social/tags/SoftwarePatents" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SoftwarePatents</span></a> <a href="https://mefi.social/tags/USPTO" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>USPTO</span></a></p>
