Driving… 🏎️

Due to several reasons, I was "late" getting my license at 20. But I passed both exams (the theory questions and the actual driving) in one try. Didn't have any theory questions wrong... So I thought I didn't do too badly. I've been driving ever since. I've been in one accident so far (and that was enough), which was my fault, according to the laws. But, the other driver needed to follow a course after it, as it seems he kept causing these kinds of accidents, so the insurance felt like he was doing it on purpose... But yeah, I've been doing OK so far. […]

Biodiversity under the wheels near Repton

"ANGELA Wallace is one of many people upset about the number of koalas being killed on local roads....Little has been done to mitigate these deaths, with another koala recently killed near Repton. “No wonder our iconic koala (dunggirr) is endangered with our roads as ‘killing zones’, deforestation [causing a] loss of habitat, and them trying to survive extreme weather events such as fires and floods.”

"She pointed out that where the koala died, the wildlife fence nearby was thickly overgrown with lantana and a nearby underpass was almost impenetrable due to a mass of lantana."

If an injured, sick or orphaned native animal is found, WIRES can be contacted on 1300 094 737.

Picture getting caught doing 64kph in a 50kph area. Then imagine being so stubborn you'd fight an $80 speeding ticket all the way to the Supreme Court, and lose most of the way.

Aucklander Peter Prescott racked up $34,000 in legal fees and was declared bankrupt when he couldn’t pay them.

The lessons? Don't speed in 50kph zones and don't pursue a hopeless case through the courts. That's only for wealthy folk.

I'm a longtime fan of Martin Austermuhle's work, but this article of his in "The 51st" makes my blood boil:

Dangerous driving KILLS people. Even the people who are "fortunate" enough to survive being struck by a driver who was speeding or running a red light are often left with life-changing injuries. People who once were thriving are left unable to manage even basic self-care, much less a career.

We shouldn't be discussing reduced penalties for speeding. We should instead be discussing taking away both the license AND the car of anyone who drives dangerously.

This is personal for me. I won't go into detail because I try to keep my Mastodon account anonymous, but I will say that someone I'm close to was horrifically damaged by a driver who wasn't obeying traffic laws. Fines weren't enough to stop the driver from committing traffic violence.

No one's "right" or "need" to drive should supersede the right of other people to be safe on our streets.

Koala deaths though road and highway crashes

“There were five koala deaths on this section of the Bruxner Highway in August alone and any protection measure we can take to reduce that toll is worth taking. A section of the highway between Lismore and Casino will have the speed reduced from 100km to 80km in a bid to reduce koala deaths...Members of the public regularly call us about koalas in roadside trees, which causes sleepless nights wondering if they will be the next ones hit that we have to pick up.”

There seems to be a lack of impact data on the 'dispersed' koalas of the 'upgraded' Gleniffer 'Highway' through the industrially logged forests of Bellingen/Gleniffer. The 50s mobility design has achieved its goal, more traffic is speeding now. Meanwhile, photos proliferate of 'koalas in roadside trees'.

Question for drivers who have had trouble keeping to speed limits, especially those with adhd:

How do you teach yourself not to speed?

I got pulled over yesterday and got a ticket for speeding. It's my 4th in the almost 6 years I've been driving - although the other 3 have been for less than 10km over and was following the flow of traffic.

This one was for over 10km over.

I was passing someone who sped up as I was passing them, and I didn't notice I'd sped up so much to get past.

I've noticed that I'm more likely to speed when I haven't taken my ritalin, because I feel anxious being behind another car and not being able to see ahead of everything.

I also feel like I drive better if I don't take my ritalin, because my reflexes are faster and I'm taking in ALL the things around me instead of having a more narrow focus.. so I prefer not to take it if I'm going to do a long drive (yesterday was Bathurst to Sydney and back.. so like 8 hours).

I don't really have a sense of how fast I'm going, and I do check my speedometer but everytime I do that it's taking my eyes off the road so I can't be constantly looking at it.

_____

I don't want a lecture about the dangers of speeding. I KNOW.. it's literally why I'm asking, Chad. I was a nurse for a long time - I have literally seen what speeding does to people, probably more so than most.

The UK should build no more carriageways until its drivers learn to obey the speed limit laws. (Well, if people can argue we shouldn't have bike lanes because they once saw one cyclist jump a red, despite drivers doing that all the time...)

Someone in the village must have got a fat fine or even a ban for #speeding - the local speedwatch sign has been destroyed - even though the electronic "SLOW DOWN" sign cannot result in a charge even if it contains a camera (some do!) -All that happens is after repeated hits the registration mark is put on a list, driver gets a warning and the list sent to #Suffolk Constabulary (so they would have to be repeat offenders to actually get a ticket) #RoadSafety
