The Rail LifeOn this day in 2012, I travelled from San Diego to Los Angeles. From my hotel, I caught the trolley (tram) to Old Town station, whence I boarded the Coaster train to Oceanside.At Oceanside, I took a journey on the Sprinter, which runs inland to Escondido on a line that is commuter rail by day and shortline freight by night. The loading gauge of the freight cars is larger than that of the Siemens Desiro passenger trains, so the edges of the platforms fold up after the last service each day.After the Sprinter, I caught the Amtrak California Pacific Surfliner to Los Angeles Union Station. Those who know this route will recognise that my photo of the Amtrak set is at San Diego.
