SubstackRobina Qureshi on SubstackEdinburgh University is Singled Out in UN Gaza Report, for holding £25.5M in shares directly supporting Israel’s military and surveillance apparatus, and £58M in BlackRock, which invests in companies arming and profiting from the Occupation and destruction of Gaza. Grads walk out. The University of Edinburgh has been explicitly named by the UN as one of the UK’s most financially entangled universities in Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza. In her report From Economy of Occupation to Economy of Genocide, UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese singled out Edinburgh for holding £25.5 million in shares with firms like Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft, and IBM – all directly supplying technology and infrastructure to Israel’s military and surveillance apparatus. A further £58 million is tied up via BlackRock, one of the largest investors in companies arming and profiting from the occupation and destruction of Gaza. This financial complicity is not abstract. Gaza is now described by international law experts as “a graveyard for children” and “a site of orchestrated famine.” The institutions funding this violence are complicit in the machinery enabling it. Edinburgh students are refusing silence. Last week, graduates staged mass walkouts at multiple ceremonies. At the School of Literature, Languages and Culture, and at the Medical School graduations, students interrupted proceedings, raised Palestinian flags, chanted, and read out statements demanding the university cut ties with Israel. “No med school left in Gaza. Divest now,” read one banner as graduates turned their backs on management during speeches. This follows a year of intensifying protests: campus encampments, a hunger strike in May 2024, and staff-student coalitions pressing the university to divest its millions from companies arming Israel. Edinburgh has so far resisted. It is now described as “the most heavily entangled UK university with Israeli interests”—a phrase repeated by students, academics, and campaigners. While the UN stops short of ranking universities, its report makes clear Edinburgh is among the worst offenders. Graduates of political, social, and medical sciences are walking out. The institution that taught them about justice and democracy is refusing to practise either. As the genocide in Gaza continues, Edinburgh University’s reputation will not survive its entanglement.

1/3🧵: This is how #protest movements reach a #tippingpoint 🥲. #Edinburgh #university, a #uni that was named in the #UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese's report about #Gaza #genocide enablers, saw its PhD #students walk out en masse from their own #graduation ceremony on Friday. Hear those who think they are the majority shout "shut up" until they come to realise the majority is loudly, clearly and beautifully supporting #Palestine and #divestment.

When George Mason University president Gregory Washington received notice that the Trump administration had opened an investigation into complaints of antisemitism, he was “perplexed.”

But there are signs it may be part of a coordinated campaign to oust him.

We don't teach an art degree at #LincolnUniversityNZ, Te Whare Wānaka o Aoraki, but we're filled with art. We're a smaller university that specialises on land management (agriculture, landscape architecture, environmental policy and planning, conservation and ecology, etc.). Still, one of the nice things about working here is that art is everywhere.

Since the 1970s, we've built up a significant collection of over 300 artworks by artists from Aotearoa New Zealand and around the world. They're on display in classrooms and hallways and as sculptures in the gardens.

Just outside my office is this terrific sculpture of tunariki (baby eels) by Bing Dawe.
