CW: Uncomfortable, unsavory nightmare.</strong></p><p>This prompt sparked another scene I'll use in <strong><em>Reluctant Courier,</em></strong> where Bolt (a day angel) is the main character. Fortunately, she's an SC in a sequel story so I can have the devil-girl pry the unsavory dream out of her and stay within the intent of the prompt, while writing <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/gender" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gender</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/fiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fiction</span></a>. 😋</p><blockquote><p>I woke with a gasp, the echo of my scream ricocheting around the tower. Bolt had straddled me in bed, her wings flared widely like a canopy above us, and was shaking me by my shoulders as my eyes shot open. The dream evaporated like fog at dawn, but I knew it had been a sleep terror.</p><p>"Are you okay?" she asked, voice quaking.</p><p>I laughed.</p><p>"Not funny! It sounded like an assassin had snuck in and knifed you."</p><p>"Probably the PTSD, again. It's gone, anyway. Haven't you ever had sleep terrors?" I thrust up with my pelvis.</p><p>She looked down at her hips. Her eyes flicked to how she held my shoulders. If she'd had an inkling of kissing me, it imploded instantly and she fluttered off, shedding a down feather that see-sawed toward my face. I waved it off.</p><p>"Um," she said, inordinately embarrassed. I <em>had</em> suspected my friend and new captain of the guard had a crush on me; now I felt more certain. </p><p>Talking to the bedstand, to hide her confusion, the day angel answered, "I remember one vivid one. I woke in a dream to find myself strapped to a table, not even a proper hammock or net bed. I wasn't alone. A dozen men cloaked in shadow and a dark mist glared at me, coming closer. I screamed myself awake, then fell out of my hammock."</p><p>"Such things always make you fall out of your hammock. Law of nature."</p><p>"Very funny. The sleep terror stuck with me, me who had always had a string of guys in upper school I rode, athletes, weight lifters I helped train, stratoflyers, some I'd taught to fly tandem. All taller, more massive, with wider wingspans than mine, but I always kept control. I used them, but I later became a criminal so that's not surprising. I know what caused the terror: The day before I'd been a photographer accompanying a magazine reporter interviewing Morning Glory†—"</p><p>"The famous theatre actor?" I rolled on my side, propping my head up with a hand. She faced me, her big brown eyes wide as she relived her fear, getting it out of her.</p><p>"Yeah. That's when Boss Mead walked in as a patron of the arts, having bankrolled the current production." </p><p>We'd both been blackmailed by the mobster. "Intimidating," I observed.</p><p>"After I calmed down with the three men in the room, taking crap photos because of my jitters, I realized I was a woman <em>alone in a room with three men,</em> all bigger than me, with Boss Mead himself a daily terror, overwhelmingly powerful, holding my life in his hands, able to crush me on a whim."</p><p>"Go on."</p><p>"I realized then that it was all fine and good to consider myself progressive, to want equality between men and women—but when I feel surrounded and threatened, however irrational, there's a fearful animal inside that won't give up whatever power it takes for me to maintain control."</p><p>I nodded. "That's human nature. We <em>are</em> animals. Forgetting that and not planning how to deal with our impulses is <em>always</em> a mistake."</p></blockquote><p>=-=-=-=-=<br>† That scene is in PennedPossibilities 775: <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/@sfwrtr/115154999728867974" translate="no" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">eldritch.cafe/@sfwrtr/11515499</span><span class="invisible">9728867974</span></a></p><p>[Author retains copyright (c)2025 R.S.]</p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/BoostingIsSharing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BoostingIsSharing</span></a></p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writer</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/author" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>author</span></a><br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/cozy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>cozy</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/mystery" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mystery</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/sf" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sf</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/sff" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sff</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/sciencefiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sciencefiction</span></a><br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writing</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writingcommunity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writingcommunity</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writersOfMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writersOfMastodon</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writers</span></a><br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/RSdiscussion" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RSdiscussion</span></a> <br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/RSstory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RSstory</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/RSReluctanceStory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RSReluctanceStory</span></a><br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/microfiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>microfiction</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/flashfiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>flashfiction</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/tootfic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>tootfic</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/smallstory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>smallstory</span></a></p>
