RS, Author, Novelist, Prosaist<p><strong><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/PennedPossibilities" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PennedPossibilities</span></a> 777 — SC POV: Describe a recent dream. CW: Uncomfortable, unsavory nightmare.</strong></p><p>This prompt sparked another scene I'll use in <strong><em>Reluctant Courier,</em></strong> where Bolt (a day angel) is the main character. Fortunately, she's an SC in a sequel story so I can have the devil-girl pry the unsavory dream out of her and stay within the intent of the prompt, while writing <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/gender" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gender</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/fiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fiction</span></a>. 😋</p><blockquote><p>I woke with a gasp, the echo of my scream ricocheting around the tower. Bolt had straddled me in bed, her wings flared widely like a canopy above us, and was shaking me by my shoulders as my eyes shot open. The dream evaporated like fog at dawn, but I knew it had been a sleep terror.</p><p>"Are you okay?" she asked, voice quaking.</p><p>I laughed.</p><p>"Not funny! It sounded like an assassin had snuck in and knifed you."</p><p>"Probably the PTSD, again. It's gone, anyway. Haven't you ever had sleep terrors?" I thrust up with my pelvis.</p><p>She looked down at her hips. Her eyes flicked to how she held my shoulders. If she'd had an inkling of kissing me, it imploded instantly and she fluttered off, shedding a down feather that see-sawed toward my face. I waved it off.</p><p>"Um," she said, inordinately embarrassed. I <em>had</em> suspected my friend and new captain of the guard had a crush on me; now I felt more certain. </p><p>Talking to the bedstand, to hide her confusion, the day angel answered, "I remember one vivid one. I woke in a dream to find myself strapped to a table, not even a proper hammock or net bed. I wasn't alone. A dozen men cloaked in shadow and a dark mist glared at me, coming closer. I screamed myself awake, then fell out of my hammock."</p><p>"Such things always make you fall out of your hammock. Law of nature."</p><p>"Very funny. The sleep terror stuck with me, me who had always had a string of guys in upper school I rode, athletes, weight lifters I helped train, stratoflyers, some I'd taught to fly tandem. All taller, more massive, with wider wingspans than mine, but I always kept control. I used them, but I later became a criminal so that's not surprising. I know what caused the terror: The day before I'd been a photographer accompanying a magazine reporter interviewing Morning Glory†—"</p><p>"The famous theatre actor?" I rolled on my side, propping my head up with a hand. She faced me, her big brown eyes wide as she relived her fear, getting it out of her.</p><p>"Yeah. That's when Boss Mead walked in as a patron of the arts, having bankrolled the current production." </p><p>We'd both been blackmailed by the mobster. "Intimidating," I observed.</p><p>"After I calmed down with the three men in the room, taking crap photos because of my jitters, I realized I was a woman <em>alone in a room with three men,</em> all bigger than me, with Boss Mead himself a daily terror, overwhelmingly powerful, holding my life in his hands, able to crush me on a whim."</p><p>"Go on."</p><p>"I realized then that it was all fine and good to consider myself progressive, to want equality between men and women—but when I feel surrounded and threatened, however irrational, there's a fearful animal inside that won't give up whatever power it takes for me to maintain control."</p><p>I nodded. "That's human nature. We <em>are</em> animals. Forgetting that and not planning how to deal with our impulses is <em>always</em> a mistake."</p></blockquote><p>=-=-=-=-=<br>† That scene is in PennedPossibilities 775: <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/@sfwrtr/115154999728867974" translate="no" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">eldritch.cafe/@sfwrtr/11515499</span><span class="invisible">9728867974</span></a></p><p>[Author retains copyright (c)2025 R.S.]</p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/BoostingIsSharing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BoostingIsSharing</span></a></p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writer</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/author" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>author</span></a><br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/cozy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>cozy</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/mystery" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mystery</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/sf" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sf</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/sff" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sff</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/sciencefiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sciencefiction</span></a><br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writing</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writingcommunity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writingcommunity</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writersOfMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writersOfMastodon</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writers</span></a><br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/RSdiscussion" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RSdiscussion</span></a> <br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/RSstory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RSstory</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/RSReluctanceStory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RSReluctanceStory</span></a><br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/microfiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>microfiction</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/flashfiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>flashfiction</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/tootfic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>tootfic</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/smallstory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>smallstory</span></a></p>

CW: Mildly suggestive</strong></p><p>This excerpt from <strong><em>Inklings</em></strong> (a WiP) shows the interpersonal dynamic I'm trying to create in my writing. Wintereyes (the POV) was raised by wolves and is naïve, so she doesn't understand humans or their inanities well—and he's a guy who's shown interest in her. I hope the reader feels her wonder but also a sense of worry as to where this leads. It's <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/gender" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gender</span></a> fiction, with her viewpoint on gender relations being an alien (wolfish) viewpoint.</p><blockquote><p>I hesitated, holding my fingernails above my leg for a couple heartbeats, then scratched off the lacquered flesh-color powder covering the scar at my hemline, brushing the cracked powder to the sidewalk. I pointed at my blue feathers scar, which was three crossed blue quills with downy pale blue ends. "Why is this pretty?"</p><p>"I know it's not ink." [A tattoo like those on his chest.]</p><p>"It's a scar. Go ahead, touch it," I said, not remembering until afterwards what I'd been told about how Township women were expected to act—but I'd said it so it was too late to unsay.</p><p>"Are you sure?"</p><p>I nodded evenso. One's word once given remained given.</p><p>Like all scars it had feeling, but felt like mud or sap caked on the skin. I felt his cautious finger tips, muted. "It feels like a feather!"</p><p>"It's hair," I corrected, "contoured to the barbs of the feather."</p><p>He pressed in, saying, "It does feel rubbery like the scar on my hip. But it looks painted... like painted carved wood—" His voice caught. "Carved into your skin?"</p><p>"My gift. [Her magic.] Happens when I use it. This was my first, for the Blue-feathers Wolf Pack. It took me years to realize it was how the wolves saw themselves. A new hunter's first kill is often a blue kite; they're actually stupid birds, easy to catch..." </p><p>He hadn't removed his hand as I spoke and I suddenly realized the scar was above my knee on the inside of my thigh, and I held my knees apart to make it accessible. Part of me didn't want to interrupt his exploration, so I didn't. I simply enjoyed the slight tickling sensation.</p><p>He remembered himself, that we sat at school outside on a bench, or realized a few students were looking; he flinched his fingers back. I sat there aware of my breathing. Of my heart beating. Of feeling happier than usual. It might not be the exact language YOU are speaking, but people speak the way everyone around them spoke. </p><p>I remember a teacher chastising a student for saying something that was "not a word." The teacher appealed to me, as another adult in the hallway. I sided with the kid-- if I know what she meant, and you know what she meant, and SHE knew what she meant, then it was definitely a word, even if it wasn't in Webster's yet. </p><p>Grammarly is a tool for forcing written words in to prescribed grammar. Sometimes that might be what you want or need. But if you want me to hear your authentic voice, you put in on the page any damn way you want. </p><p><a href="https://dmv.community/tags/writing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writing</span></a> <a href="https://dmv.community/tags/grammar" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>grammar</span></a> <a href="https://dmv.community/tags/usage" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>usage</span></a></p>

Randy<p>Day 2 - Don’t believe what they say.</p><p>On social media, there was a hype about people trying disgusting foods, more specifically surströmming, the Swedish fermented fish. People were nearly dying, a new nuclear weapon was declared, and there were many likes on YouTube.</p><p>The same goes for how Malmö would be today: a Muslim city, more explosive than Baghdad, with extreem crimes and only falafel bars.</p><p>I don’t know where I am right now or where I spent my second day, but I am experiencing this place in a different light.</p><p>I went to the DFM (Disgusting Food Museum) with a 10-year-old. Reading, seeing, and smelling weird stuff, I mean, we humans are very creative when it comes to food and what we make food from. But the most important part of the experience is tasting.</p><p>Surströmming is not as extreme as people make it out to be. I mean, I will not wear an eau de toilette made from it, but I wouldn’t mind eating it on some bread with mustard.<br>Even a 10 year old agrees with it. </p><p>If you don’t try, you don’t know. </p><p><a href="https://social.linux.pizza/tags/sweden" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sweden</span></a> <br><a href="https://social.linux.pizza/tags/europe" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>europe</span></a> <br><a href="https://social.linux.pizza/tags/travel" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>travel</span></a> <br><a href="https://social.linux.pizza/tags/writing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writing</span></a> <br><a href="https://social.linux.pizza/tags/blog" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>blog</span></a></p>
