Over 70K people attended the 4-day Celebration of Cycling in Monterey County this month, Sea Otter Classic.

Our Bike Buzz, Special Edition shares the viewpoints of some of those people, in four posts — including youth, women, first-time and long-time attendees, people speaking languages other than English, and people visiting from other countries:

We are grateful to John McCarthy, Esq of McCarthy Law firm in Monterey for his generous contribution today bikemonterey.org/about/financi. John asked that his contribution help support Bicycling Monterey’s Education Projects, e.g., Alternatives to Fines for Traffic Citations: bikemonterey.org/youth-bike-an. (All donors are welcome to specify how they'd like their donation used—i.e., for Website and Public Outreach; Education Projects; Advocacy Projects; or General Operating Expenses.)

We appreciate donations in any amount, by check, credit card, debit card, or PP balance. To donate to the Bicycling Monterey work—a grassroots volunteer effort since 2009—go to bikemonterey.org/about/financi.

Talking with some city staff about all of this (and not being a politically active/government savvy person), apparently the ONLY time input on these kinds of things -- ie friendliness to bicycling/cycling lanes/etc. gets considered is when there is some kind of active open comment period on a city plan or rule or initiative. So... most of the time those comments just go in one ear and out the other. However, when they are working on policy/rules/laws then those comments are used to (hopefully) shape how those rules are written. (feel free to correct me... I am new to this). #BikeAdvocacy

Bike Buzz: Summer 2024 News from Bicycling Monterey
bikemonterey.org/bike-buzz-sum

As we mention in our Summer 2024 newsletter, bike advocates on Mastodon include #BikeNite organizer Phil / @ascentale, who happens to be a staff member of our fellow #CalBike partner, Bike East Bay; and Spokane active transportation professional @BarbChamberlain.

They are among an increasing number of other bike advocates on Mastodon / in the fediverse. Feel free to reply to this post so we can find more of you, e.g., #CaliforniaBikeAdvocates, #USABikeAdvocates, #NorthAmericaBikeAdvocates.

Muchas gracias to Sandy Larson of Monterey for a generous contribution May 22 in support of Bicycling Monterey! bikemonterey.org/about/financi

Sandy is a retired librarian—and savvy about #EarthStewardship! Although humble about it, we know she volunteers—a lot!—at solar-powered, bike-friendly (bicycle rack near the front entrance of the sanctuary) First Presbyterian Church of Monterey, including in the Jay Bartow Memorial Garden (pictured) and in the Stephen Ministry program.

Why were most of the cyclists in this photo wearing masks in November 1977? Was it to avoid breathing polluted air?

If so, thank goodness we have the EPA now; I hope we can address modern threats to air quality, like climate change related wildfires, rather than giving up and letting the air become difficult to breathe again.

Great way to start the #NewYear: being approached with #BikeAdvocacy questions on the courtyard after #church last Sunday (at #solar-powered First Presbyterian Church of #Monterey—which has #BicycleParking by the sanctuary's front door).

The church member who approached us (not the man in the photo, though at same spot) is a #Carmel resident with many specific ideas for #infrastructure improvements near Carmel High #School (which one of his #children attends) and elsewhere.

Not catching us at church? We welcome phone calls with questions anytime! bikemonterey.org/contact-me

October 10 deadline.

California Bicycle Coalition / #CalBike wants input from all 58 CA counties. Especially needed: feedback from people who bike or walk in #Fresno, #Kern, #SanBernardino, #SanJoaquin, #Solano, #Tulare, and #Ventura counties.

bikemonterey.org/complete-stre

"Almost every California community has a state highway that doubles as a local street. These are often the most dangerous roads, because the California Department: of Transportation / Caltrans has historically prioritized moving cars quickly over the safety of people #biking and #walking.

"CalBike is seeking input from people who use these local streets to help create a report on the safety of Caltrans-controlled #roadways. Please fill out CalBike's survey." form.jotform.com/CalBikeCoalit

Questionnaire for #BikeMonth:

WHO: Wherever you live, and whether you’ve biked a little or a lot—or just want to, but something is holding you back—you are encouraged to respond to this #Bicycling #Monterey questionnaire. Tell us your ideas, opinions, or experiences.

If you formerly biked but have stopped, we want to hear from you too! The first respondents range in age from 12 to 54, and all ages are welcome.

WHY: Many things contribute to just how welcoming, pleasurable, convenient, and safe #biking is for a person, regardless of their age or ability. The combined responses will help raise awareness about the impacts, both positive and negative, of attitudes, behaviors, #infrastructure, and more on whether or not people #bike.

Heightened awareness is vital to bringing about positive changes—in individuals, institutions, and society at large!
