I love of using canning jars for general food containers -- pantry, fridge, freezer. They are glass, well-sized, easy to come by, and cheaper than most alternatives.
I recently learned that the "metal" storage lids (the flat piece that goes inside the metal band) are almost all coated in some form of plastic or vinyl, that in many cases contains BPA. What I thought was a plastic-free option turns out not to be.
But I have also found alternatives! 1/n

After over 130 yrs of providing food to America, ranging from #Pineapples to #Pears to #Peaches to #PetFoods, modern marketing #mismanagement puts #California cannery #DelMonte into big #Bankruptcy blaming "borrowing" binge that led to billions in 21st century debt.
Current company HQ claims they secured another nearly a billion in #loans to keep operating as they seek a buyer.
Once one of the great west coast companies, "Del Monte Plant No. 1" built in post earthquake #SanFrancisco was heralded as the largest #fruit and #vegetable cannery in the world, employing 2,500 people and producing 200,000 cans of Del Monte brand food per day.
Later, it became a subsidiary of RJ Reynolds tobacco, and owner of #SunKist oranges & #StarKist tuna. In 2006, Del Monte became the second largest pet foods corp by purchasing Meow Mix & Milk Bone brands, but since then, HQ moved to suburban Walnut Creek CA and many of the Del Monte operations & brands have been thinned out and sold off. In 2025 brands still include #Contadina, College Inn #soups, and since 2001, a similar subsidiary 100+ yr old #canning brand called S & W and a more recent foray into burgeoning bubble teas.

Nothing signals the start of the 4th of July weekend like picking the currants. Got up bright and early to remove the bird netting and pick this years abundant harvest before the bushes were in full sun. Now wife will juice them and make jelly which should last us a couple years. Let’s see if we can break the 2021 record of 13 small & 8 large jars. #backyard #gardening #summer #canning
Next year I might look for determinate style tomatoes because I'll be #canning them so having just one harvest would be nice. Even these San Marzano like ones are indeterminate though, might be difficult. #gardening
First Dill pickles of the year with more to come https://www.diningandcooking.com/2102405/first-dill-pickles-of-the-year-with-more-to-come/ #canning #FoodCanning #FoodPreservation #YesWeCan
I just learned about this website for food preservation.
Made dandelion jelly, first time doing it but it was so fun! https://www.diningandcooking.com/2092082/made-dandelion-jelly-first-time-doing-it-but-it-was-so-fun/ #canning #FoodCanning #FoodPreservation #YesWeCan
Found a great use for tiny onions! https://www.diningandcooking.com/2089606/found-a-great-use-for-tiny-onions/ #canning #FoodCanning #FoodPreservation #YesWeCan
A fellow tomato fan in town wanted details on my pressure canner so I thought I'd share the pics here, too. There's nothing like the smell of fresh tomatoes, onions, and butter. And when you open a jar a year later the aroma is still there. #GrowYourOwn #tomatoes #canning #food #cooking #gardening
It was almost too much new-to-me stuff to pull it off, but I did it!
#Canning violet and redbud jellies today. I used my new pressure canner as a water bath canner(no pressure, obvs), and it was almost a little too tall on the new stove.
I got a couple of steam burns and one burn on my arm from the edge of the canner. So, lesson learned. I really should use my water bath canners only for this, because they are shorter and wider.
I also used a different pectin, and new-to-me recipes for both jellies. I really need to write down my favorites cause it's hard to find them again with the internet being so enshittified.
I must've had a sugar fairy visit, because I didn't buy enough, but I found more in the cabinet.
I should not have put the hibiscus flowers in the violet tea to color it. The jelly is gorgeous, but it's not purple.
I still have enough dark purple violets that I may be able to make another batch later this week after it stops raining. I will have to go get more sugar and jars, though.
I think if I make the second batch, I will remove the green part of the violet flowers first, which means I'll need to pick twice as many flowers.
I made a sugar syrup last week with only purple violet petals and it is astoundingly purple.
So, just in case, I downloaded the entire USDA guide to canning. I refer to it every year when I can. I expect canning more things this year and want to make sure I have access to safe instructions. I'm afraid it might get DOGE'ed
