From the vantage point of the High Line, we are presented with a striking perspective of the Edge building, an architectural marvel that graces the New York City skyline. The High Line, an urban park built on a historic elevated railway track, provides a unique and elevated view of this iconic structure.

Coming to #NYC this fall: a 16-foot-tall pigeon.

"Nobody takes pigeons all that seriously: They are background animals, their gray bodies blending in with the dirty pavement they flock across, pecking around for whatever humans drop on the ground. Which is entirely the point that Argote was making in proposing it for the perch atop the High Line Plinth."

Over 100 photos of the #HighLine and environs today. Also walked more than double my daily steps goal (and probably something like 4x what my actual, office-dweller daily average is).

This space is for kids under age 12 (or allows adults accompanying a kid). Some of the steel framing is exposed and explorable and they can crawl through it. There's also a gopher hole (out of frame to the right) in the adjacent planting to pop up and look around.

Tightly packed buildings and large trees, Manhattan.

This photograph embodies something about Manhattan that I’ve mentioned before: For such an intensely urban place, there are a lot of examples of the natural world. It isn’t the kind of (ostensibly) “pure” nature that we see in the America West, but I sometimes think that its close juxtaposition with the city environment almost makes it more precious. We have whole forests out here in California, but in Manhattan a single tree can sometimes mean almost as much...continues: gdanmitchell.com/2023/12/30/ur

Arch, High Line Park. © Copyright 2023 G Dan Mitchell.

An arch structure at the High Line Park, Manhattan.

I didn’t even pause long enough to find out what this structure was. I was attracted to its form and its appearance in a space full of other linear forms, and by the low-angle and rather stark late-day light coming from the right. I suspect that it is some sort of commercial construction, but who knows? From appearances, it could be a monolith in the vein of “2001: A Space Odyssey,” though I doubt that this one was left by aliens...continues: gdanmitchell.com/2023/12/26/ar

Brick wall and an autumn tree, The High Line, Manhattan.

Merry Christmas 2023! This is another photograph in the recent series from Manhattan’s High Line Park, where the subject of partially bare autumn trees juxtaposed with brick walls held my attention. We took a long walk on the High Line on a breezy November day, and we were impressed by the amount of fall color. In truth, there was almost as much as I find in some of the natural areas where I photograph...continues: gdanmitchell.com/2023/12/25/au

Structural elements at the High Line Park, Manhattan

Taking a cue from the music-related title of this photograph, I suspect you may have noticed that my photographs cover a wide range of subjects. When people ask me “what I photograph,” probably expecting a short answer like “landscapes” or “portraits” or “street,” there can be an awkward moment while I consider how to answer. I don’t photograph just one thing… any more than a composer would choose to write only, say, minuets. There is more than one thing to express, so more than one approach is necessary. If anything, my photographs are about… how I see the world photographically...continues: gdanmitchell.com/2023/12/23/co

Autumn Leaves, Brick Wall #2. © Copyright 2023 G Dan Mitchell.

A nearly bare tree with autumn leaves and a brick wall, High Line Park, Manhattan.

This photograph is another on the theme of end-of-autumn trees and brick walls — of course, in Manhattan. The previous photograph in this series featured a much starker contrast between the dark wall and three white tree trunks. This one is more subtle, with darker and thinner branches that don’t stand out as clearly. This tree has only a few remaining colorful leaves, and I suspect that they, too, were gone soon after I made the photograph...continued: gdanmitchell.com/2023/12/18/au

Three white-trunk autumn trees in front of a brick wall at High Line Park, Manhattan.

On one of the days of our recent New York City trip we took a very long walk. We started at our hotel west of Central Park, roughly around the Natural History Museum, and headed south. Our first goal was the Hudson Yards complex, which we had not visited since it was under construction. Full of energy after a lunch stop there, we decided to keep going. We picked up the High Line Park walkway here and eventually ended up all the way down at the Whitney Museum...continues: gdanmitchell.com/2023/12/17/th
