E.g. in April 1536, Manco Inca escaped from the Spanish, rescued his principal wife, Curi Ocllo, & fled #Cusco to plan a #rebellion.

Exactly 3 years later, in April 1539, Gonzalo Pizarro set out to capture the rebels.

#TravelPhotography from #OnThisDay in 2019 when we set foot in #Peru for the first time. We had to go see something of the #Inca, of course, so headed to #TamboColorado, a 15th century administrative complex built during the reign of #Pachacuti who had an interesting rise to power, to say the least. It was painfully hot, very dry and exposed, but a fabulous place to visit and admire that trapezoidal #architecture favoured by the Inca.

We're standing on a raised part of desert ground in an Inca complex. The walls, which run at right angles to form rectangular rooms or streets in a sprawling pattern expanding out for well over a hundred metres from this point are mostly single storey-height, but a wall on our right that stretches out in front of us is twice that height and feels like it would have fronted a building that existed here. No roofs are present so we have a semi-top-down look at a maze of warm, pale-yellow blocks and bricks matching the rough, sandy desert floor. In the distance, beyond the outermost wall of this complex are lines of bushes lending the landscape a flash of unexpected greenery, and beyond them a range of low hills, deeply-crevassed and somewhat jagged in places, and dry, only slightly darker in texture from the land beneath our feet. The sky is a mix of blue sky and sheets of thin, hazy cloud, and there are dark shadows beside the walls indicating a sun high above us. Everything radiates heat here and there is a definite sense of abandonment and a deep silence. Architecturally, there are some interesting niches and windows set along the surface of every wall we can see; each looks about the right size to frame a vase of flowers, and each has a distinct trapezoidal form, larger at the base than at the top. There's a great feeling of oddness and wonder and stepping back in time.
