Some advisers to & allies of #Trump insist he’s simply trolling #JeromePowell & hoping to torment the #FederalReserve chair but won’t actually follow through with trying to fire him. [how very presidential]

But the existence of the letter — & Trump’s interest in discussing it — suggests that he is engaging in the type of moves that he often does ahead of ultimately making a major decision.

It remains to be seen whether #Trump will actually go ahead with trying to fire #JeromePowell, a move that some in his admin have cautioned could be calamitous & have far more expansive fallout than Trump appears to anticipate.

Trump has in recent weeks called on Powell to resign, saying he has not done enough to lower #InterestRates. But as recently as Friday Trump said he had no plans to fire Powell, despite saying the #FederalReserve chair was doing a “terrible job.”

Holy shit

#Trump showed off a draft of a letter firing the chair of #FederalReserve, #JeromePowell, during a meeting with roughly a dozen #House #Republicans on Tues night, polling them as to whether he should do it & indicating that he likely would….

The meeting in the Oval Office was on an unrelated topic…. But Trump used it to discuss what has become one of his favorite topics: his hatred of Powell, whom he elevated to chair in 2017….

#Fed watchers see the building issue as an admin effort to build a case to oust #JeromePowell for cause.

"I think whether the president decides to push down that road or not is going to depend a lot on the answers that we get to the questions that #RussVought sent to the Fed," Hassett told ABC.
Asked if #Trump has the authority to fire Powell, #KevinHassett said: "That's a thing that's being looked into, but certainly, if there's cause, he does."

#Trump said as recently as Friday he won't fire #JeromePowell, but Hassett's comments appear to crack the door open again.

The admin has ramped up pressure on the #Fed over cost overruns for its HQ renovation project, which Hassett said on ABC's “This Week”was $700M over budget.

On Thurs, #OMB head #RussVought sent #JeromePowell a letter demanding answers to a series of questions about those overruns & project changes, & whether they complied with the #law.
