saw a post about geckos and wanted to post this photo I took of tiny (then undescribed) day gecko species i found right outside my house but i can't seem to find it. here's a another I took while on a survey of the herpetofauna of that region 8 years back in 5 days from today.

i believe the common name and even the scientific name has changed but I know it as the Termite Hill Gecko (Hemidactylus triedrus) and it does get a lot more vividly coloured than this.

Yesterday was Jerry's Gotcha Day, 4 years exactly since we brought him home from the lizard breeder we bought him from.

I have the date marked in my calendar in part because that also means it's time to change the tube in his UV-B lamp, which he needs in order to ensure he gets enough vitamin D. The output of these tubes declines with time and they need to be periodically replaced, and for the brand I use the manufacturer recommends doing so every 12 months.

Hmmm. 6 weeks until we go away for our summer/winter holidays, and I still need to find someone to look after this dude.

Blue tongue skinks are super convenient pets if you're going away for up to about two weeks or so. Adults can comfortably go that long without eating so with heating and lighting on a thermostat and timers, a reservoir of drinking water, and (in summer) aircon left on in the room to avoid overheating he is absolutely fine being left home alone. Longer than that, though, and it can get a bit tricky.

Unlike more common pets like dogs and cats there are no commercial kennels/pet sitters for scaly sausages. Also his enclosure is big, heavy, and fragile, so moving it to a volunteer pet sitter's home is not really practical. So, either I need someone willing to come to my house once a week to give him food and fresh water, or I need to improvise a portable temporary enclosure.
