The Fighting Dragons of Ara, formally designated NGC 6188, is an emission nebula located about 4000 light-years away near the edge of a large molecular cloud in the constellation Ara (the Altar). The nebula was given its name for its resemblance to two ‘dragons’ emerging from within the ominous dark dust clouds to face off with one another. This image is of their ‘profiles’ pointed squarely at each other, captured by the DOE-built Dark Energy Camera (DECam) mounted on the Víctor M. Blanco 4-meter Telescope at the U.S. National Science Foundation Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory, a Program of NSF NOIRLab. The reddish glow of the dragons’ backs is ionized hydrogen, ‘lit up’ by light from the bright young stars — only a few million years old — in the nebula. Of these young stars, 27 form the beaming open cluster NGC 6193 (in the upper left quadrant of the image, left of the image’s centerline), which gives a background glow that further defines the outline of the dragons. These young stars have also been blowing off intense stellar winds since they ignited, sculpting and shaping the gas and dust into the mythical ‘duel’ that we see today.

A Silhouette Hunts for Dark Energy

The silhouette of the Víctor M. Blanco 4-meter Telescope appears as just a speck in this panoramic sunset image of Cerro Tololo, home to the U.S. National Science Foundation Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (CTIO), a Program of NSF NOIRLab. CTIO is a collection of telescopes and instruments located on the Cerro Tololo and Cerro Pachón mountains in Chile. CTIO and the Blanco Telescope are located at an altitude of approximately 2200 meters (7200 feet).

The Blanco Telescope is used to carry out the Dark Energy Survey (DES), a project supported in part by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science. The goal of DES is to map galaxies, detect supernovae, and find patterns of cosmic structure that will reveal the nature of dark energy, a mysterious influence thought to be driving the accelerated expansion of the Universe. Astronomers believe around 70% of the Universe may exist in the form of dark energy. Blanco searches for it using the Dark Energy Camera (DECam), which has a lens that measures nearly a meter (3.3 feet) across.

The photo was taken from the nearby Cerro Pachón, home to: NSF–DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory, jointly funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) and the U.S. DOE Office of Science; Gemini South, one half of the International Gemini Observatory, operated by NSF NOIRLab; and the SOAR Telescope.

Lights of the Night Show at Gemini North

Laser light and star trails combine for a cosmic light show at Gemini North, one half of the International Gemini Observatory which is supported in part by the U.S. National Science Foundation and operated by NSF NOIRLab, on Maunakea in Hawai‘i. This scene was created by combining multiple timelapse images.

In the foreground sits Gemini North, situated near the highest point in the Pacific Basin at an altitude of 4213 meters (13,822 feet). The orange streaks were created by Gemini’s Laser Guide Star (LGS) system at several different observing positions. The laser creates an ‘artificial star’ by interacting with atoms in the upper atmosphere approximately 90 kilometers (50 miles) above the Earth. Earth’s atmosphere distorts light from the laser-created ‘star’, just as it distorts the light from objects under study. By measuring these distortions, Gemini’s adaptive optics system can correct for them in the telescope’s science observations, resulting in crisper, clearer views of the Universe for astronomers.

In the background, stars swirl around Polaris, the northern hemisphere’s pole star. As Earth rotates over the course of a night, stars seem to circle the celestial poles, showing up as trails in long-exposure photographic images.

The Milky Way shares the stage with a luminous bubble of green and orange airglow in this panoramic image of Gemini North, one half of the International Gemini Observatory, supported in part by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) and operated by NSF NOIRLab. Gemini North (right) is accompanied here by the Canada-France-Hawai‘i Telescope (CFHT) (left). In this image, you could remove all of the stars, the brilliant stripe of the Milky Way, and the nearby city lights of Hilo, Hawai‘i (far left), and you would still be left with a picture that isn’t completely dark. This is thanks to the persistent light of airglow.

Airglow is primarily caused by sunlight interacting with atoms and molecules in Earth’s upper atmosphere, which allows them to gain excess energy. This excess energy is then released as a particle of light called a photon. The frequencies of the photons determine the captivating colors of airglow. While it’s often difficult to see this light with the naked eye, a camera can capture it, as seen in the photo above. Intersecting the Milky Way is another lucent phenomenon known as zodiacal light with the gegenschein to the right.

This Image of the Week showcases the stunning Milky Way gracefully arcing over the NSF Víctor M. Blanco 4-meter Telescope at the U.S. National Science Foundation Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (CTIO), a Program of NSF NOIRLab in Chile. CTIO is located at an altitude of 2200 meters (7200 feet) in the remote mountains of Chile. This location, high in the sky and far from city light pollution, allows telescopes like the Blanco Telescope to study the sky in breathtaking clarity. This image encapsulates the beauty of the cosmos and the sophisticated efforts undertaken by astronomers to unravel its mysteries. One such effort in which this telescope has played a major role is the Dark Energy Survey (DES). The survey examined the origin of the accelerating Universe to uncover the nature of dark energy by measuring the 14-billion-year history of cosmic expansion. Over a six-year period, this telescope, armed with the Dark Energy Camera (DECam) fabricated by the U.S. Department of Energy, observed about two million distant galaxies and found several thousand supernovae. The results of this ambitious survey are being used to trace the history of cosmic expansion and study the nature of dark energy.

A photography of the NSF–DOE Vera C. With an altitude of more than 2600 meters (8600 feet) at Rubin Observatory, Cerro Pachón is an ideal location for astronomical research with its dry, stable air. The 8.4-meter Simonyi Survey Telescope at Rubin Observatory, equipped with the LSST Camera — the largest digital camera in the world — will survey the entire southern hemisphere every few nights for a decade to create an ultra-wide ultra-high-definition time-lapse record of our Universe. This unique ‘movie’ will bring the night sky to life, yielding a treasure trove of discoveries.

Rubin is positioned near two other observatories in the foothills of the Chilean Andes: the Gemini South telescope, seen at upper-right, and the SOAR Telescope, the smaller telescope to Gemini’s left. Gemini South is one half of the International Gemini Observatory, supported in part by the U.S. National Science Foundation and operated by NSF NOIRLab. The small dome directly to the right of Rubin is the Rubin Auxiliary Telescope (AuxTel), which will provide complementary data on the atmosphere above to assist Rubin’s observations of the Universe.

As Earth rotates throughout the night, the stars appear to circle the north or south celestial poles. The southern hemisphere’s pole star, Sigma Octantis, is located in the middle of the ‘vortex’ in the image. It is fainter than the northern hemisphere’s more recognizable pole star, Polaris.
