@proseandpassion Because the UK system has never been proportional. It doesn't matter how many votes you get in total, or there would be more LibDems and Green MPs, what matters is how they are distributed.

Corbyn attracted extra votes in seats where he didn't need them but lost them in seats where they were critical.

This election was very similar overall to the ones before, but the distribution was the difference.

Without #ProportionalRepresenttion of some sort, it's all very silly.

Biggest-ever gap between number of votes and MPs hits Reform and Greens

The gap between the share of total votes won by the winning party in the 2024 general election and the share of Parliamentary seats won is the largest on record, BBC Verify has found.

This disparity has prompted renewed calls for reform of the electoral system, with Richard Tice of Reform UK complaining on BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Friday of the “injustice” that his party had received millions of votes but only five seats in Parliament.

The Green Party’s co-leader Adrian Ramsay said he wanted to see a “fairer system” to ensure that “every vote counts equally”.

The Electoral Reform Society claimed it was “the most disproportional in British electoral history”.

Our new Government is set to get over 63% of the seats but less than 34% of #votes.

All voters should count equally, wherever you live and whoever you #vote for.

Millions of us who participated in the election found that our vote didn’t matter, because of our unfair First Past the Post voting system.

The only countries in Europe to use First Past the Post like this are the UK and Belarus.

Parliament should represent the people of this country.

The #strikes by #nurses and #AmbulanceWorkers in the #UK are as much to do with frustration at over a decade of chronic #underfunding of #PublicServices as they are to do with #pay. And if #Sunak and #Barclay can't see that then they are more out of touch with reality than I thought.
And this is against a background of the #rich getting #richer and the #poor getting #poorer.
We need a new #government and a new #voting system.
