Hiroshima and Nagasaki charred. They disintegrated. People and sparrows and rats and cicadas and faithful pet dogs — all that was alive a nanosecond before the mushroom clouds erupted in blue sky — exploded and then evaporated. They were the fortunate ones.
In Hiroshima, about 140,000 people perished by the end of the year. In Nagasaki, about 70,000 succumbed. Tens of thousands of the victims were children.

There are no photos of the immediate aftermath of the bombing, at least not on a human scale. For the survivors, though, the images of those moments never faded. Human forms staggered with strips of flesh hanging from their bodies. Eyeballs dangled from sockets. Everywhere, people screamed for water to cool their burning throats. In Hiroshima, they threw themselves into the river, which writhed with their torment until death freed them.
Those who survived that first day found little relief. Flies laid eggs in burns, then the maggots hatched, a perverse sign that life was continuing. Family members used chopsticks to remove the infestations, but most victims died. The biggest danger was the radiation, which could not be seen in any hue. People who seemed fine days after the bombing suddenly collapsed and died.

Survival often meant burns that formed excruciating keloids or internal organs that were eventually invaded by cancer. For many of those who made it through, decades of stigma followed. To be a hibakusha, as the survivors of the atomic bombing are known, was to live as a poster child of nuclear horror. Marriage prospects withered. Survivors worried about passing on disease to the next generation.
No one yet understood the full scope of what destroying and irradiating two cities meant, for the people or for the land. What did it mean to live poisoned by radiation? Or to eat from a plant growing in the toxic soil? Who would take care of the children who had lost their parents? Who would rebuild these lost cities?

Eighty years ago, Hiroshima and Nagasaki burned from the bomb. They burned from the fires that were sparked by the bomb. And they burned from the mass cremations that kept the fires going until all the bones were purified.
On Aug. 15, Japan surrendered. The Japanese empire’s bloody march through Asia was over. But the impact on civilians lingered, both in the countries the Imperial Japanese Armed Forces had invaded and at home, where a nuclear Armageddon had come twice.

What remained of Nagasaki and Hiroshima were not simply vast graveyards of rubble but the strength of the survivors, who began to rebuild their lives and then their cities.
Fumiyo Kono, 56, wrote a best-selling manga series about the war, which prompted a hit movie, television show and stage musical. While she was born well after, even thinking about that day when Hiroshima was bombed, she said, made her physically sick. On trips to a museum memorializing the victims, she could not bear it. She did not know what to do.
“Maybe one day, the answer will come from your heart,” she said, of how to process the devastation of her hometown.
All she could do was draw: a mushroom cloud, a family and a story that unspools from there.

"When Anna* was 19, she had recently come out as a lesbian and struck up an online friendship with a transwoman on an anonymous chat site. As the friendship developed, Anna says the transwoman “pressured me” to meet and perform oral sex on her penis.
Anna refused.
When the young Melbourne lesbian later shared her story of sexual harassment with her ­female university peers, rather than empathise with her, “I lost some of my closest friends … and I was told I was a terf (trans exclusionary radical feminist) and transphobic”.
She was also told “that lesbians actually can like the opposite sex’’, even though her friends knew that Anna suffered from PTSD after growing up in a violent home and being molested at the age of 13 by a man while on her way home from school.

Anna is now 27, in a lesbian relationship and working as a dog handler. She describes her political views as left wing and “does not feel comfortable sharing spaces with men”, given her history of sexual trauma and assault.
Yet this highly articulate young woman says that when she has commented online about the need for “lesbian boundaries” and single-sex spaces while using “polite and inclusive language”, she has been called “regressive” and a terf by her female peers in the LGBTQIA+ community and has received death and rape threats from trans activists.
All of this was occurring in an environment where Anna found it almost impossible to find single-sex social groups for female-born lesbians; a situation she describes as “depressing” and “heartbreaking”. Discrimination based on gender identity is illegal, so gay women’s events must be open to anyone who identifies as lesbian, and these days that can include ­bisexual and non-binary women, transmen and pre-operative and post-operative transwomen.
Anna says that apart from one recently discovered lesbian club, “I have never been able to find a single-sex lesbian-only space or group”.

Nicole Mowbray, spokeswoman for the Melbourne-based Lesbian Action Group, says that, as a young lesbian, Anna is far from alone in having experienced harassment and social isolation.
LAG is a lobby group that argues “biological sex is real, binary and immutable”, and resists “the new lesbophobia” and erasure of lesbian-only culture and spaces.
The group also maintains that lesbians who believe in the reality of biological sex differences “are under attack from the LGBTQIA+ umbrella mob”.
Mowbray says her organisation has received “lots of anecdotal evidence” that young lesbians are being sexually harassed at mixed-sex queer events by men and by transwomen who identify as lesbians. “They’re telling us these horrendous stories of what’s going on in these mixed-sex events,” Mowbray tells The Australian.
In a court submission, LAG states: “It is now commonplace for lesbians to be pressured into having sex with transwomen, and to face risk of social isolation if they do not agree with that very concept.”
LAG has made this claim as part of Giggle app founder Sall Grover’s high-profile appeal in the Federal Court, which opens on Monday (August 4).

It’s a case that has laid bare the tensions between trans rights and the rights of biological women, ­including lesbians, to maintain single-sex spaces.
The court has granted LAG “intervener” status in the appeal against Justice Robert Bromwich’s ruling that Grover indirectly discriminated against transgender woman Roxanne Tickle by blocking her from her women-only networking app.
Grover had excluded Tickle from the app because she considered her a biological man, but Justice Bromwich found that she was “correctly described as a woman” and that sex is “changeable”.

Women’s rights vs trans rights: how I was drawn into a very modern battle

"Sall Grover marks February 7, 2020, as the day her life changed. Only in retrospect, of course. On the actual day, around 7am, when she woke in her Gold Coast home to all hell breaking loose, she thought it would blow over. She told her mum it was too ridiculous. “It will pass,” Grover assured her.
Thousands upon thousands of selfie photos of men had been uploaded overnight to her brand-new start-up app, Giggle.

This was meant to be a little corner of the internet just for women, as Grover would later tell a judge. Conjured up in the kitchen of Grover’s parents’ house, Giggle would offer a range of online support services for women only, including a chat room. Yet the new platform, barely a month old and not yet formally launched, was inundated by profiles of thousands of men. Certainly the photos looked like men. Many of them were likely men who identified as women. But, still, biological men.

Grover was on a fast-learning curve about trans politics.
“We were being called bigots, transphobic bigots. They were writing ‘KILL TERFS’ to alert other trans to join in. I had never heard the word TERF before,” Grover tells Inquirer from her Main Beach home, referring to the acronym for trans-exclusionary radical feminist made infamous by trans activists.
Grover says she has since learned that the human brain, in particular the female brain, can distinguish between men and women pretty well. It’s part of our deeply rooted biological makeup, picking up cues to help us to choose between fight or flight when faced with potential danger.


Grover chose to fight. She removed all the profiles featuring photos of men from her Giggle app. She also took to Twitter, expressing her view that women should be entitled to women-only spaces. Grover had been drawn into a very modern battle between women’s rights and trans rights.
A screenwriter who had worked in Los Angeles, Grover tells Inquirer she was “a good little liberal”, fully on board with the LGBTI movement. “I had heard of trans. I didn’t live under a rock. I knew it was now LGBT. I’m a supporter of the LGB part, and if there’s a T attached (for trans) I was like, no problem, I support that too.”

But when her new online platform offering services for women was flooded with trans activists, Grover asked herself this question: as profoundly fraught as the trans issue is, why should women’s rights come second?
Grover was three months’ pregnant when Roxanne Tickle, a man who identifies as a woman, filed a complaint in December 2021 with the Australian Human Rights Commission about gender discrimination by Giggle after being blocked from the women-only app.


In August 2024, Federal Court judge Robert Bromwich found that Giggle and Grover had indirectly discriminated against the trans woman based on gender identity.

Grover’s daughter is now three and the Giggle founder’s legal battle to create a women-only space is into the next round with an appeal to the full bench of the Federal Court due to run over four days from August 4.
The history of gender discrimination law explains why an Australian court finds itself knee-deep in the morass of conflicting rights.

In 2013, both the Labor government and the opposition waved through changes to the Sex Discrimination Act to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity, with little understanding of the far-reaching and serious consequences. For starters, in the head-on conflict between women’s rights and trans rights, what would it mean for women’s sport or women’s prisons? What about crisis hostels for women, or bathrooms and other women-only spaces?

When, early on, some women here and overseas, most famously JK Rowling, raised concerns about the possible dangers of trans women entering women-only spaces, they were fobbed off as intolerant and mean-spirited nutters. Yet they had identified the central issue: is it fair for the law to blithely set aside the rights of women to have their own spaces, free from biological men?
Earlier this year the UK Supreme Court unanimously ruled that a woman is defined by biological sex, clarifying the operation of equality laws about single-sex spaces. This means that while transgender women are protected from discrimination under the Equality Act, they are not considered women for the purposes of single-sex spaces and services.

The court concluded that any interpretation other than one based on biological sex would render the operation of the Equality Law 2010 incoherent and impracticable. This does not affect transgender rights in other areas, such as the workplace, pensions, retirement and social security."

"In Texas, Tennessee and other Republican-led states, legislators have passed scores of laws restricting the lives of transgender people. They have made it illegal for transgender minors to get certain medical treatments and have threatened to have their parents investigated.
It made Jesse Thorn, the father of two transgender daughters, angry and sad. But he was never afraid. His family lives in California.
“For months and months and months,” Mr. Thorn said, “when someone would say, ‘I’m so sorry this is happening to you,’ I would say, ‘Thank you for loving my family, but it’s not happening to me. My kids are fine. Let’s see what we can do to take care of other kids.’”
All of that has changed. The clinic where Mr. Thorn’s family has received treatment for years is closing.
It is one of two prominent medical centers in California that are sharply cutting back gender-related treatments for transgender youths under pressure from the Trump administration. The moves have sent shock waves through L.G.B.T.Q. communities in a Democratic-controlled state long known for its trans-friendly politics and culture.
Children’s Hospital Los Angeles on Tuesday shuttered its Center for Transyouth Health and Development, one of the nation’s oldest and largest clinics for transgender and gender nonconforming young people and the clinic where Mr. Thorn’s family had been patients. Stanford Medicine in the San Francisco Bay Area has paused surgical procedures, including new puberty blocker implants, for those under the age of 19. Together, the facilities served thousands of patients.
Other hospitals in cities and states led by Democrats have also moved recently to curtail transgender services to minors.

UChicago Medicine announced last week that it was ending all pediatric transition care, days after another Chicago-area system, Rush University System for Health, said it was pausing hormonal treatment to new patients under the age of 18. In Washington, D.C., Children’s National Hospital announced it was discontinuing the prescription of transition medications starting Aug. 30. And the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center said its clinicians would no longer provide puberty blockers and hormone therapy for those under the age of 19.
The Trump administration has succeeded in thwarting transgender treatment for minors in some of the most heavily Democratic places in the country by adopting an aggressive approach, threatening to eliminate federal funding at individual hospitals and sending providers subpoenas seeking confidential patient information.
In California, transgender minors and their supporters had long viewed the state as a haven for transgender rights. More than two dozen states have passed laws prohibiting gender-transition treatments for minors since 2021, but California leaders went the opposite direction, passing legislation aimed at protecting families seeking transition care in the state. And a Supreme Court decision in June reinforced the idea that states would control whether young people had access to treatments for gender transition.
Now, families of transgender minors in California are searching for alternate treatment facilities. Many say they are angry with the Trump administration, but also with Gavin Newsom, the Democratic governor. Families and trans advocates say they feel betrayed by Mr. Newsom, as well as by health care administrators, who they say have capitulated to an administration intent on turning transgender children into scapegoats."

"Now thought to be the second most common cause of stroke in women under 40, it can also lead to difficulty swallowing, incontinence, seizures, memory problems, depression, anxiety and miscarriage. How has this extreme practice been normalised?

Now that Lucy has been in a steady relationship for a year, she finds herself looking back at previous sexual encounters through a new lens. The slaps to her face. Hands round her neck. The multiple late-night messages from one partner – nine years older and, in her words, “a Tinder situation”: “Can I come over and rape you?”
“I like to think I enjoyed my single 20s,” says Lucy, now 24. “I was an avid Hinge and Tinder user and I liked to think of myself as the ‘cool girl’. But I’ve been thinking about it so much – I’m not sure why. There was the friend of a friend who slapped me so hard in the middle of us having sex – no warning, just from nowhere. It actually made my teeth rattle. There was another guy I met at a bar. We got together that night and he started choking me so hard, I felt this sharp pressure, this pain I’d never experienced before. I was drunk but it sobered me up in one second. I still wonder what he did to me to cause that pain.”
Never was “rough sex” discussed before, during or after. “Among my friends, there’s this competitiveness about not being boring, not being ‘vanilla’. I think it’s very prevalent for women my age, and no one wants to kink-shame anyone,” says Lucy (not her real name). “There’s a lot of talk about online porn and what that has done to men’s brains and expectations, but I also saw a lot of very violent porn when I was a teenager. I don’t know why or how I found it. The women in porn never push back or say, ‘Don’t do that’ when they’re choked. I think I became quite performative. I like to think I’m a strong woman but … I don’t know if it’s about male validation.”
Growing concern around the normalisation of “choking” – ie strangulation – during sex has led to the recent announcement that pornography depicting it will be criminalised in an amendment to the Crime and Policing Bill.

It has become so standard among young people that one recent council-funded sex education presentation for Welsh secondary schoolchildren included “safe” choking advice such as: “It is never OK to start choking someone without asking them first …” and: “Consent should also happen every time sexual choking is an option, not just the first time.” When the presentation was made public, Fiona Mackenzie, the founder of campaigning group We Can’t Consent to This (WCCTT), was “absolutely furious but not at all surprised”.
Mackenzie formed WCCTT at the end of 2018 in response to the growing number of women and girls killed or injured in violence claimed to be consensual. How has the landscape changed in the years since?
“When we began, we were focusing on two aspects,” says Mackenzie. “The first was the men who were successfully using the ‘rough sex defence’ to murder women, claiming it was consensual and therefore getting away with it or getting ludicrously short sentences. The other part, which is the part I didn’t realise was an issue until a month or two in, was that so many young women were being strangled by their sexual partners.”
Almost seven years on, there’s been progress on the first part. The Domestic Abuse Act of 2021 clarified that a person cannot consent to being harmed for the purpose of sexual gratification and also made non-fatal strangulation a specific criminal offence. Before that, it fell under general offences such as battery, the mildest assault possible. “The major win for us is that [when women are] subjected to a non-fatal or a fatal assault during sex, there will be a much better response from the criminal justice system,” says Mackenzie. “There have been several cases since where the men have been prosecuted and convicted for murder by juries and given long sentences.”
On the second aspect, though – the normalisation of strangulation during sex – Mackenzie believes the situation has only worsened. “I’d hoped that lots of other charities and sex educators, the government and academics would get behind it, but instead what we’ve got is this completely mad idea that we can somehow help women to keep having violent sex but in a safer way. Maybe in a hi-vis jacket?”

New Hampshire lawmakers on Thursday gave final approval to bills that would ban gender-affirming care for transgender minors in the state, sending the measures to Republican Gov. Kelly Ayotte, who has not yet said whether she will sign them.

State lawmakers voted to pass House Bill 377, which would prohibit doctors from administering puberty blockers and hormones to transgender youth beginning next year. The measure includes a “grandfather clause” that would allow minors already receiving care to continue doing so even after the law takes effect.

"New Hampshire lawmakers gave final passage to a pair of bills Thursday that ban most gender-affirming care for transgender minors in the state.

One of the bills forbids doctors from administering puberty blockers or hormone treatments to patients younger than 18. Patients already receiving those treatments before the end of this year would still be allowed to continue.

The other bill prohibits gender-affirming chest surgeries for people before the age of 18.

The bills now pass to Governor Kelly Ayotte for her signature. A spokesperson for the governor did not say whether she planned to sign them.

State House Republicans made it a priority this legislative session to fight what they call “radical gender ideology."

It’s a continuation of a recent trend in Concord. Last year, lawmakers limited gender-affirming surgeries for minors and outlawed trans girls from competing in girls’ sports.

Most major medical societies in the U.S. support access to gender-affirming care for transgender youth. But Republican lawmakers — in New Hampshire and elsewhere — say those treatments are inappropriate for children and question their side effects."
