Well that's a fuckin' whirlwind of a story. Between this article, and the previous five in the six-part series ("State of Denial"), an (in my opinion) impenetrable case is made that TCEQ is a sham body, riddled with political and private-sector conflicts of interest that make it fundamentally unsuitable as an enforcement vehicle for federal environmental protection laws. It is a prototypical example of regulatory capture.

And the (federal) EPA's refusal to act in the face of that reality makes them complicit, if not downright duplicitous. As far as I'm concerned, the EPA is treating Texas as a Sacrifice Zone in order to allow out-of-state interests to continue accruing short-term returns, at the expense of the long-term health and well-being of Texans.

Inside Climate News · ‘Major’ Problem in Texas: How Big Polluters Evade Federal Law and Get Away With It - Inside Climate NewsIndustrial developers describe facilities as “minor” polluters to avoid federal permitting requirements, and environmental lawyers say the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality lets it happen.

Fom Queensland to NSW, the same story:

“Koala habitats have got smaller and smaller over the years, and the roads through them have got busier...The animals that draw visitors to the Queensland capital are being run down at an alarming rate. Just three days apart in November, separate pairs of mother and joey koalas were hit by vehicles and left to suffer on the side of the road. They were just hit and left. People don’t stop..This year we've hit over 100 within a 6km radius."

Urban sprawl is destroying wildlife habitats

The sub-urban package of houses, cars, roads and introduced pets drives Australian native animals out of their habitat. Their homes become eliminated or fragmented by roads which become extinction zones for wildlife. Unleashed cats and dogs maul the remaining homeless survivors.

The absolute priority is given to fossil fuel vehicles to fly from a to b at maximum speed. This entails a mobility design that declares any living body an obstacle on 'their path'. Some of the maimed crash survivors get scraped off the roads by volunteers. In some places wildlife admissions at the vet hospital had risen by 400 per cent in the last decade. It's a mono-cultural housing and infrastructure design where bio-diversity is non-existent in minds and policies.

"More wildlife was being forced into urban areas, leading to collisions with vehicles, attacks by domestic animals, and entanglements in fruit netting. Experts say behavioural changes need to be made and urban sprawl contained to reduce the harm to wildlife."

"The 98-page report, “‘We’re Dying Here’: The Fight for Life in a #Louisiana Fossil Fuel #SacrificeZone,” documents how residents of #CancerAlley suffer the effects of extreme pollution from the fossil fuel and petrochemical industry. Parts of Cancer Alley have the highest risk of cancer from industrial air pollution in the United States. These harms are disproportionately borne by the area’s Black residents."
