I was a fan of #Matisyahu for many years, so it is with great sadness that I'm sharing this petition.

Excerpt: Matisyahu has, in recent months, become a prominent supporter of BETAR, a movement on the far-right of Zionist political spectrum. Matisyahu himself is featured prominently on the homepage of BETAR’s website, in a video playing the guitar and wearing a shirt with BETAR’s logo, and a headband with the logo of the Jewish Defense League. Matisyahu has also publicly posted about his support of BETAR and the other organizations mentioned all throughout his various social media channels. BETAR began as the youth wing of a right-wing Zionist group with fascist influence and a long-standing hostility to Arabs, critics of Israel, and to Jews and Israelis seeking peace and coexistence. In recent months BETAR has “rebooted” and has been actively threatening Jews, and non-Jewish officials, critical of Israel’s war in Gaza. In the spirit of Meir Kahane’s legacy they encourage violent confrontation when working through the censoring mechanisms of the state to deport critics are not available.

BETAR is heir to the legacy of far-right militias and movements which were inspired by European fascism and hypernationalism. One of BETAR’s most famous products was the late Prime Minister Menachim Begin, who, as a leader of the far-right Irgun, terrorized both the British and the local Arab populations. In 1948, as Begin was forming a right-wing political party in the new State of Israel, Albert Einstein, Hannah Arendt, and other Jewish luminaries signed an open-letter decrying Begin’s fascist influences and the crimes of the Deir Yassin massacre. Like Einstein then we protest now the welcoming of a supporter of this latest iteration of far-right Zionism.

It is very hopeful to hear of these Israeli troops who are deciding to follow their consciences and refuse to fight in Gaza, joining the broader movement of former #IDF troops who are refusing orders to support the ongoing occupations of the West Bank, Gaza and Golan Heights.

I came across this story from a few months ago while researching the prevalence of #IDF troops posting evidence of #WarCrimes on social media.

It is a horrifying story, but I appreciate the author for taking the time to document some of the worst examples of this phenomenon.

Some of this, of course, is common to all wars. I've seen and heard similar things to these posts from US servicemembers (FYI, I am an attorney who works in the area of military law) but there does appear to be an escalation of scale in the quantity of such posts from IDF troops, which I personally believe represents a tacit endorsement of said war crimes by the brass.

P.S. War crimes are committed by all sides in wars, including this one. And they are always wrong.

I've been fearing this news since the beginning of the wretched war in #Gaza. These stories of IDF troops who are now dealing with terrible PTSD (with some taking their lives) are so heartbreaking.

As always, it is the rank and file grunts who have to deal with the horrors of war, while the generals and presidents can sit removed from it all. --- #Netanyahu probably sleeps like a baby because he doesn't have to see the carnage with his own eyes.

I'm lending a small amount ($25) through this microlending effort to help Adel, a Palestinian man in Bethlehem, to be able to buy the construction equipment he needs for his business in Bethlehem, in the West Bank.

I hope you'll consider doing the same. It's definitely a good cause.

Also, for my fellow #HumanisticJews --- if you lend to this loan, be sure to join the Humanistic Judaism group on Kiva, so our group will get credit for supporting this loan.

#BenStiller's op-ed is powerful, one of the few that resonate with me as a Jew who cares deeply about the well-being of Palestinians and Israelis.

Like all statements, there are nuances I would quibble with, but the overall tone reflects what I personally feel these days.

Another round of extreme overreaction by The University of Texas at Austin to peaceful campus protests.

It is sad to see this because once upon a time, I would have encouraged my son to consider UT for college (based on my experiences of living across the alleyway from the UT campus, I came to deeply appreciate the place), but not anymore. The Austin I loved (which included many peaceful South Mall protests when I was there) is no more.

BTW, I remember spending the part of the night in a tent on the South mall as part of a cannabis legalization protest sometime between 1997-2000. The UTPD never even stopped by. That is how uneventful campus protests were back then.

The Texas Tribune · Dozens more arrested at UT-Austin as police use pepper spray, flash bangs to break up protestsThe arrests mark the second time in less than a week that police have broken up a pro-Palestinian demonstration. This time protesters tried to set up an encampment on campus.

For the fourth day of #peacepassover2024 (a time of supporting Palestinian and Israeli voices for peace, liberation and justice), I made a small donation to עומדים ביחד نقف معًا (Standing Together) , which describes itself as a "grassroots movement mobilizing Jewish and Palestinian citizens of Israel in pursuit of peace, equality, and social and climate justice."

Thank you Bernie Sanders for speaking some truth to #Netanyahu.

Excerpt: Mr. Netanyahu. Antisemitism is a vile and disgusting form of bigotry that has done unspeakable harm to many millions of people. But, please, do not insult the intelligence of the American people by attempting to distract us from the immoral and illegal war policies of your extremist and racist government. Do not use antisemitism to deflect attention from the criminal indictment you are facing in the Israeli courts. It is not antisemitic to hold you accountable for your actions.

For the first night of #PeacePassover2024 (a season of seeking to find ways to act in solidarity with Israelis and Palestinians who are working to bring peace and liberation in their communities), I made a small donation to #CombatantsForPeace.which Wikipedia describes as "an Israeli-Palestinian NGO and an egalitarian, bi-national, grassroots movement committed to non-violent action against the “Israeli occupation and all forms of violence” in Israel and the Palestinian territories."
