@GottaLaff I’m in the non-profit world in a profession where #studentloanforgiveness was promised after 10 years. We still need more licensed professionals to work in fields most find undesirable due to low pay or conditions. I wanted to what I’m doing anyway & the incentives helped me commit to it
I work in a very specific MH/behavioral field where we need more trained professionals.
Anyway, that student loan forgiveness was reneged is a crime. What bullshit to break an agreement like that.

The states on Thursday filed a request asking the #Missouri court to impose an #injunction to block the #regulation while litigation continues.

The ruling, issued late Wed by US Dist Judge J. Randal Hall in #Georgia, stems from a lawsuit filed in Sept by 7 #Republican-led states to stop the #Biden admin’s new #StudentLoanForgiveness rule. The
states — #Missouri, #Georgia, #Alabama, #Arkansas, #Florida, #NorthDakota & #Ohio — claim that the admin is exceeding its authority & illegally preparing to forgive #loans before the rule is even in effect.

The decision delivers a small victory in the #Biden admin’s ongoing fight to alleviate federal #StudentLoan #debt, & a much-needed win after a series of #legal challenges have stymied those efforts. #StudentDebtRelief has become highly politicized & divisive as #conservatives seek to dismantle plans they *say* unfairly burden taxpayers & are a naked attempt at swaying voters [or they’re just bitter.]

The coalition of 11 #Republican-led states, headed by #Kansas AG #KrisKobach, alleged in their lawsuit that the president overstepped his authority in creating the repayment program — claims that mirror the case that last year toppled #Biden’s initial effort to forgive up to $20k in federal #StudentLoans. The states say Biden’s new repayment plan is an attempt to sidestep a #SCOTUS ruling that struck down his #DebtForgiveness program.

He said the economic impact of the program, which the Congressional Budget Office estimates will cost ~$230B over the next decade, would require congressional input.

The ruling arrives weeks after Crabtree said 8 of the 11 states challenging the plan failed to adequately show how they would be harmed by the policy. He concluded that only #Alaska, #Texas & #SouthCarolina made a strong enough case that the plan’s #debt-relief component could harm their tax revenue….

Borrowers who also have #graduate #loans would have had their payments lowered by the weighted avg between 5% & 10%.

That feature of the plan, which launched in Oct, will be shelved while a lawsuit is litigated.

Crabtree, who was appointed by President Barack Obama, wrote that the #Education Dept failed to clearly show that #Congress authorized the repayment plan created by the #Biden admin in 2023.
