How does a #Teotihuacan altar end up in the Maya centre of #Tikal in Guatemala, some 1,000 km away?
Ramírez's et al. offer an quite intriguing answer including 5th century BCE conflict, politics, and client kings in their @Antiquity 99(404), 2025 paper here:
Chr.

Adela Breton was a trailblazing archaeological artist. She grew up in #Bath and died 101 years ago today (13th June 1923).
Her meticulous copies of the wall paintings at #ChichenItza & #Teotihuacan in #Mexico, are the only full record of what was there at the time.
She features in Unsung Women in Somerset but will have a full chapter in the Junior Edition, available for preorder now from http://books2read.com/unsung-junior.
I love not having to drive so I can capture these garlands as we drive under them.

Tikal was long the mightiest #Maya city, and today the stately ruins reflect their glory. Six temples with massive roof combs soar above the city, and they built them steep!
.
But did non-Mayans rule this place? In 378 AD, Tikal's king Great Jaguar Paw died, the same day a non-Maya figure Fire is Born arrived - prob a general from #Teotihuacan, near modern Mexico City. It appears the northerners invaded Tikal, executed the king, and installed their own dynasty of rulers.

Tláloc (pron. Tla-loc) is one of the most important and formidable gods in the Aztec pantheon. He was considered the god of rain, water, lightning and agriculture. Tlaloc was seen as both a benevolent god providing life-giving rain but also as an unforgiving and destructive deity when he sent storms and drought.

After seeing the ruins of #Mesoamerican cities all my life, I love finding artistic representations of what they used to look like.
