Robert Fairhead<p>A group of us who campaigned for the <br><a href="https://aus.social/tags/VoiceToParliament" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>VoiceToParliament</span></a> have formed a <a href="https://aus.social/tags/FirstNations" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FirstNations</span></a> Book Club, where we read books written by <a href="https://aus.social/tags/Indigenous" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Indigenous</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/Australians" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Australians</span></a>. </p><p>After hearing Claire Nichols' conversation with Leonie Norrington and&nbsp;Merrkiyawuy Ganambarr-Stubbs on ABC Radio National's The Book Show about the collaboratively authored A Piece of Red Cloth (Allen and Unwin 2025), I recommended we add the book to our reading list. </p><p>Norrington is not an Indigenous writer, but Yolŋu Elders adopted her family when they moved to Arnhem Land in the 1960s. Norrington's adoptive mother, Clare Bush, worked with her on an outline for the book, based on oral history about the kidnapping of a Yolŋu girl by Makassan traders. </p><p>After Bush died, her sisters introduced Norrington to the book's co-authors and Yolŋu knowledge holders, Merrkiyawuy Ganambarr-Stubbs, Djawa Burarrwanga and Djawundil Maymuru, to finish the project.</p><p>Set in the 1600s, the book is a fictionalised historical account of the Yolŋu people and their culture, their trading and personal interactions with the Makassans, and the impact of Dutch merchant colonisers on what was formerly a respectful relationship between the Yolŋu and Makassans.</p><p>While I felt aspects of the patriarchical Yolŋu society made for uncomfortable reading, the (female) majority of our Book Club did not share my discomfort, and this is a book written by women about strong women. </p><p>It's also a book that reveals the less well-known pre-English colonial history of Indigenous Australia, and for that alone, it's well worth reading! ⚫🟡🔴</p><p><a href="https://aus.social/tags/books" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>books</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/novels" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>novels</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/history" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>history</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/fiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fiction</span></a></p><p>Link to The Book Shop episode on ABC Radio National: <a href="https://www.abc.net.au/listen/programs/the-book-show/leonie-norrington-a-piece-of-red-cloth/104888120" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">abc.net.au/listen/programs/the</span><span class="invisible">-book-show/leonie-norrington-a-piece-of-red-cloth/104888120</span></a></p>

In Australia's Parliament this afternoon (16th Oct) there was a debate around The Water Trigger. The Bill needs to pass bc it is urgently needed to ensure that gas fracking projects don't harm local water resources and the local environment.

In NT two projects are in the final stages of authorisation. Both will poison water in the local #indigenous  communities.

As things stand,  Dr Sophie Scamps and Zali Steggall argued boldly that *NO* Australian citizen should go without safe drinking water because of Fossil Fuel industrial projects. abc.net.au/news/2023-10-16/wat

Precisely.
Go without water ?
In Australia 2023 ???

Saturday's referendum NO-voters need to realise that the referendum wasnt about division, bc Australia has division and inequality ALREADY .

How about some fracking in Dutton's seat?? God forbid !!!! His supporters would demand a #Voice and rightly so.

How many Australians really KNOW anything about First Nations' hardships or how the machinery of White Australia racism really works?

Truth is,  like all other #FirstNations globally,  they are *in the way* of the colonising overlords who want to seize land and resources for their own use.

And historically those overlords just needed to "wipe out" those indigenous ppls by any means possible: massacres, displacement, theft, siege, exploitation, disease, death, imprisonment...

The way Australia's First Nations are being treated nowadays is nothing new. They are unheard and invisible and 60% of voters are just fine with that.

ABC News · Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young introduces water trigger bill to close fracking loophole Par Roxanne Fitzgerald

Very good article from Sean Kelly in the SMH on a racist Australia

‘Perhaps the most telling moment of the entire campaign came early, when Peter Dutton said the Coalition would hold a referendum on recognition alone: “We went to the last election and a number of elections before that with that as our policy and that will be our policy going into the next election as well.”

‘A policy that has been on the books for years but never delivered: is there a greater symbol of the hollowness at the heart of the supposed goodwill of Australians towards Indigenous people? We want to help, we say, just tell us how! Oh, that’s not a good option. No, not that either. Your people are dying, you say? Let’s wait a while.

‘…Or as novelist Melissa Lucashenko, of Goorie and European heritage, said, “white Australia doesn’t want to give blackfellas anything, even when it’s nothing”.’
