alojapan.com/1345673/japans-fi Japan’s first fully battery-powered tugboat development kicks off #Electrification #Japan #JapanNews #JapanTopics #news #tugs Tokyo Kisen Co., Ltd. and Marindows Inc. have launched Japan’s first fully battery-powered EV harbor tugboat development project. The tugboat, planned for operation in the ports of Yokohama and Kawasaki, aims to achieve zero greenhouse gas emissions in line with the Carbon Neutral Port (CNP) initiative. This proj

A lot of people are going to say things like: “that's it, it was never really viable anyway. we should just have highways and walking paths”.

But not only is the statement completely false, that's the attitude that got us here. That's the attitude that has brought us climate change. And worst of all, that's the defeatist and nihilistic attitude that will lead to the burning of not just more forest, but whole communities, and eventually, the likely collapse of our civilization.

After the 2021 November floods there was never a question about whether the government would spend (never accounted for!) billions on repairing the highways immediately.

The CN and CP Railways also rebuilt theirs that were heavily damaged, and did it a lot faster, because railways are a lot easier to build, and rebuild, than 4 lane, or 2 lane highways.

During the 2023 wildfire on the other side of Cameron Lake, the railway sat unused while the highway was closed for weeks, leading to massive economic losses for #PortAlberni #tofino and #Ucluelet and all the Nuchanulth Territories and huge social disconnection.

So rebuild it? Absolutely!

Electrify it? Darn right!

Run Freight and Passenger on it again for the benefit of all Islanders!? OF COURSE! It should have never been allowed to stop its 100 years of service to us in the first place!

The picture here might even show it. In the 114 years of the Alberni sub there have been fires, but nothing like this. My wooden trestles are strong. They are meant to be replaced as timbers age, gradually, over decades. It will be hard to replace the whole thing. Hoping no one else suffers this loss. Thank you to those brave firefighters. Old and new. We're at Vemb, start of the Lemvigbanen, where the 60+ yr old diesel railcar is parked next to its brand new Siemens Mireo Plus B battery powered replacement.

The Lemvigbanen is a place where these battery powered trains make a lot of sense: relatively low frequency and not too long a track. And considering the train company managed to run this route with 60yr old trains up to now they have shown that "taking care of equipment" is something they can do.

Re-purposing 40-year old underground trains with batteries
Year-long test to electrify GWR branch lines

Diesel -> Standard grid -> Renewables
960 -> 235 (-> 26 kg) CO2/day

Battery trains end up being half the cost per train mile than catenary electric, and 63% the cost of diesel. Moreover much easier to install than catenary.
