Following my recent post about #GHDL, I was made aware that there is no bootstrap chain for #GNAT! For such a widely used and historically significant language like #Ada (totally not biased), it seems like a strange hole to be left. Plus, it would mean that GNAT could be included in full-source distributions like #Guix.

Thankfully, there is an #NLNet project [1] just for this! I'm glad that there's some real resources being devoted to this. LMK if anyone has news!

Was about to attempt to package #GHDL for #Guix... spent an hour before I stumbled across the guix-electronics[1] channel!! I know there's a channel aggregator somewhere but I always forget to check it before making a package...

Funny that it isn't upstreamed yet though. GHDL seems like a package that would fit into Guix proper very well, we have a `fpga.scm` file already anyway. Perhaps its accomodating all the different compile-time variations?

It is possible now to run your #vhdl syntheis using #ghdl and @yosyshq with:

guix ghdl-clang ghdl-yosys-plugin -- yosys yourscrip

No mess with dependencies or host configuration, only #guix is necessary.

#ghdl (in its #clang variant), a #freesofware #vhdl analyzer, compiler, simulator and synthesizer, is part now of #guixscience channel. It may be used as any other #guix package with a simple

guix install ghdl-clang

This means too that pre-built substitutes are available online.

#ci testing of a #vhdl project in the #sourcehut build farm.

It runs a #ghdl simulation using the #osvvm verification library, creating a #guix local profile from a manifest file to handle all dependencies. Requirements are pulled from a custom repository. All #reproductible thanks to pinned guix channels.

With #guix, this is what it takes to produce a netlist for the 7 series of #xilinx #fpga devices.

> guix install yosys-clang ghdl-clang ghdl-yosys-plugin

> yosys -p 'ghdl --std=08 leds; synth_xilinx -top leds -family xc7 -ise'

It uses only #freesoftware, with #yosys and the #ghdl synthesis module as its backend.

Managed to produce a #guix package for #ghdl with #clang backend.

By now, it uses #gnat binaries from alire-project/GNAT-FSF-builds, so it is no a clean implementation. Hopefully, one day we will succeed on bootstrapping ada tooling in a proper way.
