#mess

0 message0 participant0 message aujourd’hui

There is something very particular in living a tri-lingual life, it's that I'm often confused in which language to take personal notes.

For work it's easy, mostly in English. About my kid it's mostly in German. And French everywhere in between. My calendar events are a mess, my bookmarks are a mess, my contacts are a mess.

This is ok till I need to look for something specific, because if I look for the word in the wrong language I won't find anything.

PSA: Do not trust AI #translators.

We recently published an article in German in which we mentioned Amazon.de. Someone apparently used an AI translator to translate the text into English, and the #AI changed Amazon.de to Amazon.co.uk.

The human didn't notice that he was being confused and posted something about UK online, which other people started opining on.

What a #mess.

@freddy : for some time it is permitted to obtain a certificate for a (hopefully non private range) IP-address.

Which doesn't matter, because certificates serve no useful purpose anymore (you don't need a certificate to encrypt a connection): you can get a certificate for anything.

Here's an example - ONE certificate, still valid, taken from crt.sh/?id=14703945231 (I've removed the *. entries):

Https server certificates have been reduced to proof that your browser has a secure connection to *you-don't-know-whose* server (often a MitM such as Cloudflare) based on some irrelevant unique string of characters, which gets more meaningless as new TLD's are being added.

Meanwhile the internet is flooded with randomly generated domain names such as ?.com, (? = 4-6 characters), *.suijidaohxl.top [1] and *.ragaz.co.za.

[1] currently at 77.9 K subdomains and increasing: virustotal.com/gui/domain/suij (btw all hiding behind Cloudflare).

Hackaday: ALL ABOUT USB-C: MANUFACTURER SINS

hackaday.com/2023/02/07/all-ab

From article, The First Sin:

"The first, honorary entry is omitting 5.1 kΩ pulldowns on a USB-C port intended for charging your device. “Why does my device charge with a USB-A to USB-C cable, but doesn’t charge with a USB-C to USB-C cable”, asks the user? The answer is simple – because your device’s designer decided to save one cent while building your device, and didn’t care about testing the device before selling it to you. In other words, your device is supposed to have two resistors connected to the USB-C plug, yet it does not, and USB-C power supplies are unable to detect that they ought to provide power. Remember, the resistor detection is fundamentally a safety mechanism, and by now, information about this problem is omnipresent."

The overall situation of USB-C out there does seem to be a clusterfuck.

Oy.

Hackaday · All About USB-C: Manufacturer SinsPeople experience a variety of problems with USB-C. I’ve asked people online about their negative experiences with USB-C, and got a wide variety of responses, both on Twitter and on Mastodon.…

@archaeohistories Although #Irish #coffee was rather popular in the old days in the Netherlands, bars and restaurants these days make a #mess of it. It is much easier to take cream out of a siphon than to use fresh half-whipped #cream.
The result? Cream running in streaks from the rim to the bottom on the inside of the glass. And to add insult to injury, they never ask if you use #sugar beforehand. They just give you a #spoon. Arrgghhh! 🤬

House MartinAction

Well the evidence is there! We have at least 9 pairs of House Martins under the eaves, five in nests of their own making, 4 in artificial nests put up to try to get in through the back door. It hasn’t worked, this is their second clutch of obviously growing and scoffing chicks.

I stayed late today to burn the binder out of all the hand pulled tubes I coated. Tomorrow I shall make a pretty doodle and (hopefully) see some fruits of my labour.

Fingers crossed for good shades of brown and pink light- a paradox I enjoy.

I have been noticing phosphor drips around the studio now. At first I was freaked out thinking they may release phosphor into the air- but they really just act like white paint. I cannot kick them up or scuff them.

Not sure if I should be laughing or terrified that my messes now glow pretty colors under a germicidal bulb?

Gosh- just look at that pink stripe! Some of my glassblower friends back their tubes with white glass. Sure that makes it look nice when its off... but I prefer the white backing to come from a glowing phosphor powder!

Sooo excited for tomorrow!
