Street libraries, or Minibiebs, as they are dubbed in Dutch, are a fascinating and often under-appreciated piece of urban technology. While some of them are built by schools, cultural institutions or even train station architects, the vast majority of Minibiebs are installed and maintained by individual volunteers.
Ranging from repurposed plastic crates or old pieces of furniture to elaborate, purpose built constructions, most Minibiebs are placed on public land. Owing to relatively generous spatial regulations, which tend to allow homeowners and tenants in most Dutch municipalities to make use of the space in front of their house, as long as it does not interfere with foot traffic, the hurdles for placing your own Minibieb are quite low.

Gisteren belandden we door een verkeerde afslag per ongeluk in Oostzaan. Geluk erbij was dat er een minibieb langs de weg stond. De enige in de wijde omtrek (geloof me, we hebben een behoorlijk eind omgereden 
), dus de beheerder heeft flink uitgepakt.

Een nieuw biebje cheffen wordt wel weer een project, dus voorlopig komen er geen updates hier.
Tenzij jullie heeeel graag The Making of Parkbieb 2 willen volgen.
Maar ook dat kan even duren.

Ondertussen bellen en spreken buren (bij) ons aan: "Wat is er met dat schattige biebje gebeurd?" Reageren verbluft en verontwaardigd als ze het verhaal horen.
Omdat we lang niet iedereen spreken, hebben we op de nu lege plek maar een bericht achtergelaten. 6/7

We hebben wel besloten een nieuwe minibieb te plaatsen. Samen met de buurman (interieurbouwer van beroep, met in de garage ook een handige werkbank voor eigen hobbyklussen) gaat lief zelf een nieuwe ontwerpen en maken: regen-, wind-- en huftertjesproof. En ik heb goesting om mee te helpen, iets met mijn handen te maken. 5/7

Het kastje zelf staat nog in de garage, te wachten op verdere ontmanteling. Dat stellen we uit. Het een derde biebleven geven zit er echter niet meer in.
Alle boekdonaties, die in de garage een Billy-kast tot de nok toe vullen, houden het voorlopig gezelschap. Een deel ervan krijgt een plek in andere biebjes in de stad. 4/7

Hoewel hij eerder de indruk gaf dat moeder (nog steeds niets over vader gehoord, en vergeten naar te vragen) wel voor rede vatbaar was, schemert nu door dat dat anders ligt.
Weet nu niet of wijkagent zelf wat wispelturig is of dat hij ons wil behoeden voor gedoe. Maar ja, zonder zijn medewerking komen we ook niet verder. 3/7

Zo ook de moeder: "Waarom krijgt mijn zoon altijd de schuld?" Tja, misschien wel omdat hij zich ook daadwerkelijk misdraagt? Maar ja, zonder bewijs is dat niet hard te maken.
Op ons voorstel dat wij met de moeder gaan praten om voor te stellen dat het ventje met zijn kompanen meehelpt bij reparatie of bouw van een nieuwe bieb, zegt de wijkagent: "Vriendelijk en goedbedoeld, maar beter van niet." 2/7

Voorlopig laatste update.
Wijkagent heeft laten weten de jongerenwerker af te sturen op het ventje *). En hij maakt wederom een registratie aan. Meer kan hij niet doen.
*) Het waren drie ventjes, maar van eentje zijn naam en adres bekend. Dat jochie ontkent alles (zoals vaker). 1/7
Bericht van de buren: zij zagen drie jochies van een jaar of 12 de kast omver gooien. Zij (de buren) hebben die weer overeind gezet en de boeken meegenomen. Een andere buur heeft foto's gemaakt.
Weet nog niet of ze de jochies hebben aangesproken, morgen hoor ik meer. Maar nu ben ik even mijn vertrouwen in de jongere generatie kwijt

Yay for tiny libraries! I love adding some randomness into my reading and picking interesting sounding books from tiny libraries is such a fun way to do so!
I'm not a big thriller reader, but I do love books on translation in general and Japanese literature in particular. So this one seemed right for me!
