RPG A Day 2024 Day 29: Awesome App

Full disclosure: I hate smartphone apps. I don't want my pocket computer clogged up with junk eating up memory and skimming my data for the benefit of some megacorp.

I do like dice-roller apps for games with funky dice. Genesys comes to mind. I like the game well enough, but the lack of availability of the funky dice hurts the game. (The fact it is now owned by the Asmodee megacorp is also a turn-off.)

RPG A Day 2024 Catching Up

Day 27, Marvelous Miniature: I love BattleTech. I really like how this Marauder 2C turned out in Clan Diamond Shark colors.

Day 28, Great Game Gadget: A tie between a mechanical pencil and a laptop. Both are really useful for tabletop RPGs.

Day 25, Desirable Dice: Those that roll well, being as balance and random as possible. I do have some pretty ones, but the function is more important to me. (Dice polls > single die rolls.)

Day 26, Superb Screen: Customizable ones. I like the pocketed screens where I can put in my own game aids. (Landscape > portrait. I want to see my players and the battle mat.)

RPG A Day 2024 Catching Up

Day 22, Notable NPC: Count Strahd von Zarovich.

Day 23, Peerless Player: Those who help newer players and encourage role-play.

Day 24, Acclaimed Advice: Spend less time plotting and planning and more time improvising and taking action. This is for both players and GMs.

21 - classic campaign

Another The Dark Eye post but that's what I've been playing the most in the recent years.

Our group just finished the first chapter of the Kingmaker campaign: The Horasian Empress is dead, her firstborn had gone missing many years ago, the second is a major figure of Hesinde's church, the youngest is known to be a not so great ruler (he has different priorities). A civil war emerges as the succession laws leave room for interpretation.

Runner-up...

Ravenloft campaign boxed set. The first one, set in AD&D 2e. Again, pre Grand Conjunction, pre everything. It was a fairly small demiplane. Very little was etched out in canon. It was a very memorable set for me.

That being said. I like the 5e treatment of Ravenloft. More diversity in its Darklords (Darkladies?) and people. It is a step in the right direction.

RPG A Day 2024 Day 21: Classic Campaign

I am never overly impressed by any published fantasy campaign world of adventure path (i.e. an adventure that covers most of a character's "career"). I do have fond memories of...

Forgotten Realms 1st Edition campaign boxed set. Pre Time of Troubles. Pre Spellplauge. Pre everything. Very little etched out by canon. It was a very different time and place. I'd happily run a D&D game in that historic setting.

RPG A Day 2024 Day 20: Amazing Adventure

Some of my favorites:

I-3 Pharaoh for #ADnD 1e. It was the first module I purchased as a kid. It is a classic hex/dungeon crawl with a great story and theme.

Jewel of Yavin for #StarWarsEdgeOfTheEmpire. I have run this module 3 times for different groups. A heist adventure on Cloud City... what more could a Star Wars fan want?

Most cinematic adventures for #Alien. Great stuff, and not too railroady.

RPG A Day 2024 Day 18: Memorable Moment of Play

I am coming up on 40 years of playing and running TTRPGs. I have had a lot of memorable moments. My example for today was running a one-shot Changeling the Dreaming game where the characters found themselves in the Labyrinth. As in from the movie #Labyrinth, complete with Jareth the Goblin King. The went the way that was "don't go that way" & found a dragon. The sluagh jumped on it and proceeded to ride, rodeo style.

RPG A Day 2024 Day 15: Great Character Gear

I have written long blog posts about character gear in the past. Gear should satisfy a need:

* Something new not currently represented by already existing gear.

* Rule of cool! It looks vastly different than what already exists.

If it doesn't do one of those things, then reskinning already existing gear is a better option than introducing something new.

Example: #DnD5e. A katana is just a reskinned longsword.

RPG A Day 2024 Day 14: Compelling Characters

You can make compelling characters with any RPG. That being said, I think some RPGs make it easier than others by providing guides.

Broken Record: Old School #WorldOfDarkness has a list of questions at the end of character generation that helped you build your character's past and personality.

#Fate has great tools for both world building and character development, including ties to other characters.
