If you folks are really interested in a protocol that is fully decentralized so that you don't have to worry about anyone else getting between you and your connections, there actually is one and it has been chugging along for YEARS, largely ignored by anyone even “in the field”: Secure Scuttlebutt. It's peer-to-peer (no servers, no admins, no mods) and “offline first” (TBH, this is probably my favorite feature: no Internet connection needed!)

what if instead of always-on feeds, we had digital gardens?
what if media responded to weather, to light, to rest?
what if the internet could nap?

solarsocial is another seed. a theoretical framework.
it’s not just for disruption. it’s for re-rooting.

@zelf >This study explores the development and implementation of Peer-for-Peer (P4P) networks, a family of open-source, peer-to-peer, and local-first communication protocols. Rooted in the principles of complexity theory and an ontological basis in complex realism, the research examines how small, modular, and community-driven infrastructures can serve as adaptive solutions in response to ecological, social, and technological crises. Through a mixed-methods approach, including interviews with nine case studies and an in-person workshop, the study identifies design principles that enable resilience and sustainability in P4P ecosystems. Findings highlight the critical role of modularity—both technical and social—in fostering self-organization, adaptability, and mutual aid within decentralized networks. The study also introduces the concept of "nested isomorphism," revealing how the structural patterns of technical systems influence the organizational structures that develop them. P4P protocols, such as Willow, Mapeo, and Scuttlebutt, demonstrate the viability of localized and distributed communication infrastructures that prioritize user agency and digital sovereignty. These systems challenge the colonial structures of global internet infrastructure by empowering communities to build and maintain their own resilient networks. This research contributes to complexity theory by expanding the understanding of self-organizing systems and isomorphic tendencies of technical and organizational structures. The research presents a framework for designing future communication infrastructures that align with principles of sustainability and inclusivity. The implications of these findings extend to the fields of open-source development, decentralized networks, and adaptive infrastructure design, offering pathways toward a more equitable and resilient digital future.

Well shit! That sounds really interesting!

@goofy It's funny though, because a #tagging system is what I thought of when I found the censorship system of #SecureScuttleButt to be too all-or-nothing (you can publicly or privately block a user, and that's about it; the blocking also cuts you off from the users who were reaching you through that user).
#SSB being a much more decentralized network than a federation like the fediverse, if the ability to get messages not in order was added, you could decide to hide some messages for yourself, delete, tag and stop sharing them so that other people won't get them from you and may follow your lead (without removing the ability to block bad actors altogether).

What is We Distribute, exactly? 🤔

We Distribute is a CC-licensed open media project. It serves as a people-focused tech publication, with the goal of informing and educating people about three things:

1. Decentralized Communications
2. User empowerment
3. The future of the Internet

Most of what we do involves reporting on the day-to-day developments of the #Fediverse. In fact, our articles are ActivityPub-enabled, and integrate directly into the network.

However, the Social Web / Decentralized Social movement involves far more efforts and technologies that we think are also worth reporting on: #Matrix, #XMPP, #Bluesky, #Nostr, #SecureScuttlebutt, and #Solid all bring interesting pieces to the puzzle.

Our ultimate goal is to showcase the ongoing efforts to change the shape and form of the Internet itself, at a grassroots level. Join us on this exciting journey. #WeDistribute

@jameswynn It's true that your #nostr identity is just a public key (akin to identities on, say #SecureScuttlebutt / #SSB). However, you can make an NIP-05 vanity name so that your identity becomes more easily recognizable to other people:

The system of relays is not more complicated than chosing a home server on #ActivityPub. Most of the nostr clients I've seen so far come with a handful of suggestions configured and ready to go.

That said, I find it much more difficult to avoid spam on #nostr, and generally I much prefer the content I see on activitypub. Perhaps I have been unfortunate / unskilful in my choice of relays or followings on nostr, but a lot of the posts seem to be just people promoting crypto currencies amd sharing their bitcoin address. Gets pretty boring / annoying after a short while.

Trying out #SecureScuttlebutt. Seems like this is the logical conclusion of the HO-LI moderation proposed by @Wander.

My logic: If blocking is primarily user-based (LI) and strong moderation is just to protect the instance owner (HO), then it'll be easier for everyone to just host their own servers, which SSB does out-of-the-box by syncing full histories (ala Matrix)?

#Nostr feels like the dev didn't understand #SecureScuttlebutt and tried to "fix" it anyway.
He didn't get the chaining of messages and why peer to peer was worth the hassle, so all the metadata are left in the open (who speaks to whom, and even the message length), you have to use the same relay to speak to someone…
And all the hard problems that took years of discussing them before being implemented in #ssb, nostr people are like "we'll just throw bitcoin at it and it will solve everything". 🙃

@Gargron I gave up on #Bluesky: the discord is just hundreds of idling crytpobros randomly typing "token when?"

I've built a matrix community that gather people who want to build the future of social media.

The matrix space gather ~30 projects based on #ActivityPub, the #SecureScuttleButt projects, some social networks based on other protocols: #twtxt, #XMPP, #solid and #Matrix and other projects like @ohn and bluesky

I hope people who want to build things will find like-minded people there 🤞

Manyverse isn't part of the Fediverse, because it works very differently. It's part of the SSB (aka Scuttlebutt) network, and is trying to make SSB more user friendly.

However, the aim of Manyverse/SSB is very similar to the Fediverse: to decentralise social media. You may want to try it out!

Manyverse have just released their first desktop apps, so Manyverse is now available for all major platforms (Linux, Mac, Windows, Android, iOS). You can find out more and download the apps at:

manyver.se

They also have a Fediverse account at @manyver_se

I've previously posted that Manyverse is serverless, but this isn't quite true. It can be very difficult to reliably connect internet users peer-to-peer, so Manyverse uses special servers called "Rooms" to connect users. However, actual user data is not stored online, so data storage is still serverless. There's a video explaining Room servers at youtube.com/watch?v=W5p0y_MWwD
