Seriously, if I was #LinusSebastian of #LinusTechTips I'd literally choose to #donate the cost of a #TeamViewer #subscription to #FLOSS #RemoteDesktop projects like #Dayon instead and sue TeamViewer into upholding their contract or a full refund with interest as if it was a loan because clearly they chose violate that contract on their own terms and initiative!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RT1t1JlZugM&t=140
And yes, Dayon! is awesome and I can fully recommend this as an alternative to TeamViewer, #AnyDesk, etc.
https://retgal.github.io/Dayon/
So yeah, TeamViewer literally shot themselves in the foot here by deciding to shaft paying customers who were able and willing to pay the absurd prices you asked for for a one-time license.
That's traffic in the single-digit megabytes per year and client, as there's not much between as clients pinging their server and basically boing some simple handshakes.
Also if I'm on a #LAN why would I want to use TeamViewer and not any #VNC (or god forbid #RDP) server? THE WHOLE POINT OF USING TeamViewer, AnyDesk, etc. IS TO NOT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT NATs, FIREWALLS AND IP-ADDRESSES AND JUST GET CONNECTED FFS!!!
Definitely my recommendation because it also allows for any use-cases and doesn't nag one to "buy a license!"

Yeah, that's way deeper magic than #VNC provides, unfortunately.
Honestly, X11 forwarding is the closest to that, but then you're still browsing files on the server, rather than your local machine.
Of course, my answer to the latter conundrum is to just use a cloud drive for all my storage on that machine, so files I save from #QuickBooks (the only thing I use that machine for) appear on my local linux machine after about a minute.
So, between just running QB maximized and using Goog Drive for syncing my work files, vnc is ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh good enough.
Can we just stop for a minute and appreciate how amazing #VNC is?
I know there are newer and probably better technologies, but dang, dude, I get to run a cruddy windows app on my sweet Linux machine because there's an ancient, headless windows machine literally under my desk whose sole purpose in life is serving up this one cruddy windows application to me.
P.S., I was just remembering very early modem-based remote "desktop" utilities. One that ran on the PC and would replicate the PC screen (text-mode only), and Mac utilities like Farralon Timbuktu (IIRC) that did so for the Mac.
P.P.S. The nice thing about VNC instead of a VM is that it's less keyboard-grabby and mouse-awkward, and the hardware is separate from your machine, so it's not eating up clock cycles and RAM on crap like windows defender on your linux box (inside the VM, I mean).
ALTLinux@russian_mastodon@mastodon.social @ru_ng@mastodon.social @Russia@3zi.ru
Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring

OK I tried. More than most normies would. But I failed.
Can anyone help me get a #VNC server running on my #Linux PC? I'm using #Fedora41 and need to be able to control it from a Windows 11 laptop.
Is there anything that installs via the Software app, and has a GUI? I really struggle with the terminal beyond super basic stuff...
I notice that #Gnome has #RDP settings built in. Should I use that instead?
@GossiTheDog I can highly recommend to follow @vncresolver and see all the glorious systems that are easily accessible via #VNC on the internet. Power plants, factories, train systems, etc.
