Is there anyone there who could explain to me (or point me towards a place that does) what canvas keys do, how they work, how you put them, and how you know they’re working?

I’m reading articles, watching videos, and they’re all: “Canvas keys tighten the canvas. They work like this: you put them, and it tightens the canvas. You know they’re working because your canvas is tight. *”
