Der Gemeinen Waldschwebfliege (Volucella pellucens) sieht man auf den ersten Blick von oben gar nicht an, dass sie so eine eindrucksvoll gefiederte Fühlerborste besitzt.

Unusual flies, recently spotted:
Milesia semiluctifera (tentative ID)

In bug news, the Mosquito TNTs I've been testing in my yard have become homes to dozens of mysterious larvae. Not sure what they are but possibly shore flies (Ephydridae). Will try to rear them up to adulthood. #diptera #flies #mosquitoes #entomology #insects #inaturalist https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/304537063
The rango pango reminds me of this excellent article on big blue flies in New Zealand. It's "A Cure for the Blue Fly Blues" by Steve Kerr, NZ's fly expert from the Otago Museum.
NZ has quite a few similar looking large blue flies, like this Ngaro Tamumu , the Metallic Blue Hover Fly. Steve's article shows how to tell them all apart.
Behold, Rango Pango!
That's the Māori name for this elegant native New Zealand blowfly. The fly is mostly black with a big shiny blue abdomen.
This rango pango landed on a student during our weekend field trip up in the North Canterbury mountains. She (the student) was kind enough to stay still while I photographed it.
Unlike most blowflies, rango pango maggots can grow up on rotting plant material as well as animal carcasses. The adult flies are pollinators of many plants.
This is the third observation on iNat of this species from the North Canterbury Southern Alps.
Kite-tailed Robberfly (Machimus atricapillus). This aerial acrobat is a predator of flying insects, and can easily catch an unsuspecting hoverfly.

Quite a good photo given the circumstances – and a steady pulse!
Just yesterday I stumbled upon a Machimus robber fly, but it's unclear which species it is exactly. Caught it in the act of consuming a small solitary bee:

I've completed my testing of the Mosquito TNT, a yeast-and-sugar contraption made by Austin-based Tougher Than Tom. It's supposed to rid your yard of mosquitoes for 30 days. It didn't. #mosquitoes #insects #diptera #austin #texas https://colinpurrington.com/2025/06/tougher-than-toms-mosquito-tnt/
My teen took this cool picture of a feather-legged fly (𝘛𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘱𝘰𝘥𝘢 𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘯𝘪𝘱𝘦𝘴) while on our last hike at Thompson Park:
Hornet Hoverfly (Volucella zonaria) female on a bramble flower at Bath City Farm, #Bath #Somerset #UK.
This harmless Hornet mimic has expanded its range over the past few decades, and a study has strongly linked this expansion to #climatechange.
Insect ID Help please
I came across this giant hoverfly yesterday on a walk. I've never seen one before and it's maybe an inch (2.5cm) big.
I have tried to find out which it is but to no avail. We're NW Scotland if that helps
Edit: I can share higher quality images if required, they're heavily compressed to save bandwidth

Buenos días con este pequeño díptero de la familia Conopidae "Physocephala vittata". Al parecer parásito de abejas y avispas.

Mystery fly. iNaturalist's computer vision model doesn't know it, and so far community suggestions are above family level.
