Book 2 of The Kovenlore Chronicles, A River in Each Hand, was released last month (links in profile).

It’s a world unlike any other…

What if the wrong person to save a nation & its people was the best choice? What if the most fragile heart had to be strong enough to hold everyone? What if Riparia Dellbane longs for a quiet life, but life has other ideas?

In the far north are the Frozen Lands, but otherwise the continent is surrounded by three oceans, the Para-Equa in the west, Terminus in the south, and Titania to the east. A long, slim peninsula, along with multiple islands, exists in the northwest. In the west and south are multiple, large islands. The southeastern peninsula is a barren wasteland with some volcanic islands off its coast. There are scattered islands up the eastern coast, most notably Pannulus, a roughly circular archipelago. The continent is roughly divided in half by mountain chains, some more extensive than others. Mountains also exist in other locations, especially the southwest. The west is heavily forested, the east a mix of forests and grasslands. The south desert. Some notable locations follow. Mythwyll in the southwest was the elfin homeland. In the west, Forstava is still the ora’ean homeland. In the east, Emprensa was once the home province of an empire. In the northeast, Draskrith is the realm of the shadow lords. Below that, and as noted, is Pannulus. At the continent’s center is nation of Carrdia. It’s surrounded by mountains, except in the west along its border with Forstava, and in the northeast. The continent’s biggest lake is located there, as is the mighty Key River.
RIPARIA A child of the riverbank, of the river, the Sentinel, it was called. In a child’s mind there was no time, but time there was to learn to climb, and so she did, scaling the rock along the water’s edge. Learning to dream, and dreaming, a current moving in time. Seeing the world, not as it was, but as it was before the past was dust, and that was in the beginning, long before she’d ventured forth. She set her fingers in the water’s flow —a river in her hand— the water, it’d been places she’d yet to see, was going places she longed to be. “Let me show you,” the river whispered, and one day—it did. ©January 2018, Christina Anne Hawthorne

Critical to understanding the image are all the rivers that flow south, many into Lake Radiance near the center. Out of it, like a tree trunk, is the Key River that flows over the Aramon Plains. The other major rivers, from left to right are the Thail Water, Chill River, River Tars, Wizard’s Well River, Rift River, and Repose River. Carrdia, which is roughly human heart shaped, is largely surrounded by significant landforms. Clockwise from top is the Colossus Range, the Lost Hills in the northeast, the Barrier Range in the east, and the Knarr Range in the south. Within Carrdia, significant regions exist. In the north are the Granite Highlands, Wilder Hills, Interior Forest, and the vast Baris Plains. To the west of Lake Radiance are the Triad Hills, with the Null Forest below it. Important locations? In the northwest are the cities of Coving, Brassit, and Baris. In the east are Temron, Carba, and Vernathia. On the northern tip of the largest island on Lake Radiance is Transgamete, the capital, Knoss Citadel on its southern tip. Additionally, Oaken Castle is in the Triad Hills. The ancient city of Meldenphire is set where the Thail Water and Key River join.

The idea behind the Kovenlore Chronicles structure diagram is to show how each book fits in the bigger story. Each book has its own tale and structure, but there’s also the larger story. In the background is a faint image of a woman on a horse in the mountains. Over the top of that is a horizontal line that shows story structure. Atop the line are points like on a graph that show Opening, Inciting Event, First Plot Point, Midpoint, Third Plot Point, Climax, Denouement, and End. Below the line are the seven books. Book 1, Trust in the Forgotten, covers the Opening and Inciting Event. Book 2 covers the First Plot Point. Book 3 falls between First Plot Point and Midpoint, which would be the First Pinch Point, if shown. Book 4 spans the series Midpoint. Book 5 falls between the Midpoint and Third Plot Point, which would be the Second Pinch Point if shown. Book 5 also includes the novella, Trellis House. Book 6 includes the Third Plot Point and Climax, and also includes the novella, Memorized Darkness. Book 7 stretches from the Climax to the Denouement and End. Apparently set shortly after the Great Fire of London, it starts as kind of slice of life vignette about a gathering of dudes who just love eating and catching fish. Toward the end takes on themes of faith, obsessive pursuit of The Big One, and apocalypse.

I found Tasha Suri's 'The Oleander Sword' a very compelling and atmospheric book, with plausible worldbuilding, and a very weighty and consequential approach to magic. Very striking prose too, which I've rarely found in my efforts to get up to speed with contemporary fantasy. Highly recommended.
